Extractions: The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, was originally constructed 1792-1800, the work of James Hoban. It was reconstructed in 1815 after being burned by British soldiers during the War of 1812. It has been the home of every president of the United States since John Adams. The exterior of the main structure, despite some additions and minor changes, remains much as it was in 1800. The interior has been completely renovated using the historic floor plan. It is significant for its Federal architecture, as a symbol of the presidency, and for the important decisions made within its walls over the years. Search

Jeffrey Smith Washington Post Staff Writers Saturday, July 23, 2005; Page A01 The Bush administration in recent days has been lobbying to block legislation supported by Republican senators that would bar the U.S. military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, from hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and from using interrogation methods not authorized by a new Army field manual. Vice President Cheney met Thursday evening with three senior Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee to press the administration's case that legislation on these matters would usurp the president's authority and in the words of a White House official interfere with his ability "to protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack."

Leaving the courthouse he said he had no knowledge of a relationship between Clinton and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Extractions: White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says the recommended assistance levels are excessive. Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) Setting up a showdown with Congress that could slow a spending bill to help pay for the war in Iraq, the White House said Wednesday the more than $3 billion passed by House and Senate appropriations committees to bail out the airline industry is "excessive." "The administration does not oppose some assistance to the airlines, but given the economic facts on the ground, we believe that the level of airline assistance recommended by the House and Senate Committees are excessive," said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. The difference of opinion could tie up passage of the $74.7 billion funding package sent to Congress to help pay for war with Iraq and the global fight against terrorism. The airline aid boosts the total cost to closer to $80 billion. The House Appropriations Committee included $3.2 billion for the airlines in the package; the Senate version was $3.5 billion. The airline aid was first proposed by the president's fellow Republicans, and passed the House and Senate panels Tuesday.

Extractions: Help By Wolf Blitzer/CNN WASHINGTON (Jan. 12) White House officials are denouncing Iraq's latest decision to prevent a United Nations weapons team headed by an American from inspecting sites in Iraq. Officials suggest Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is once again testing the will of the international community, and vow the U.S. will not back down. They say the U.S. currently has a "robust" military force in the region and does not need to beef up that presence, at least for now. They say the planes, ships, and troops dispatched to the region during the November crisis with Iraq will remain in place. "If the reports are true," a White House official says, "this is a clear violation of the Security Council's demand that Iraq give UNSCOM full and unfettered access to all sites." The official says it's not up to Saddam Hussein to determine the composition of the U.N. teams. "The U.N. decides who goes on these teams," says the official.
