Extractions: Birds of Prey at Londolozi Maxine Scott was the inaugural winner of the prize for the best field project in CC Africa's Ecological Journal . Here we present a shortened version of her work (adapted by Chris Roche) that appeared in the first edition of this unique publication. This is the first in a series highlighting field projects conducted by rangers at the various CC Africa lodges across southern and east Africa. Environmental indicators Birds of prey, as the top of the food chain and being sensitive to changes in environment, which affect prey availability, serve as good indicators of the health of a particular ecosystem. A four-year study of birds of prey, or raptors, was conducted by Rob Simmons in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, of which Londolozi is a part. The study determined the density and diversity of raptors within the reserve to be very high. Simmons' study was conducted over the period 1988-1992 with this in mind. In an attempt to investigate any change in raptor diversity and densities and therefore a potential change in ecosystem health, I set out to document and monitor the situation at Londolozi in 1998.
