Extractions: This is the text of the keynote speech for the Third Hong Kong Web Symposium by John December I've been involved in publishing on the World Wide Web for nearly four years. In most professions, this amount of experience would still classify me as a novice, still learning the mastery of my craft. But on the Web, four solar years, particularly the years 1993-1997 mark numerous, watershed turning points in practice and technologies. It was during this time that the Web grew up, moving from a system that was largely used by academic researchers to one which has captured a great deal of attention from business, education, government, and the general public. I am in many ways still a novice, still learning, still piecing together what communication on the Web means and how we can do it better. I've published Computer-Mediated Communication Magazine for three years, and I've learned a great deal about what Web publishing is and isn't. Extractions: Options for Creating and Maintaining Web Documents Brief Description Goals Materials and Resources Activity Description ... Internet Resources Brief Description Sooner or later, many teachers and students want to create their own Web documents and publish them on the Web. Doing so requires some knowledge about Web documents, how they are created and maintained, and ways that these documents can be managed. This activity provides insight into different ways of creating and maintaining Web documents, including strengths and weaknesses of each option. This activity is a good starting point for teachers and students who wish to begin creating their own Web documents. Materials and Resources In developing our lessons and activities, we made some assumptions about the hardware and software that would be available in the classroom for teachers who visit the LETSNet Website. We assume that teachers using our Internet-based lessons or activities have a computer with the necessary hardware components (mouse, keyboard, and monitor) as well as a World Wide Web browser. In the section below, we specify any "special" hardware or software requirements for a lesson or activity (in addition to those described above) and the level of Internet access required to do the activity.

Justin's Books A fairly comprehensive overview of vrml, MPEG4 and Java 3D are provided. This time it is the web publishing generic book - actually the professional http://www.vlc.com.au/~justin/books/
Extractions: Along the way of life, somehow I got into some book writing. Actually, I got into many different forms of writing - including writing standards work and code (OK, strictly not technically writing, but it is a form of art). This has been a long slow process over time slowly graduating to bigger and better things. Presented here is the summaries of all the books that I've worked on from the most recent to the earliest. As you can see, the list is starting to get to a reasonable length. This creates a fair amount of email that is time consuming to answer particularly as a lot of the questions are technical in nature. When this gets to 20 or so emails a day, things start to get into problems. I don't get a chance to answer everything particularly as I am also involved in higher priority work such as standards development. If sending me a question, can you please make it as short as possible. If its quick and I can dump out a 30 second reply, you are much more likely to get a response from me than one that says "why doesn't my code work?". BTW - If you see a book titled Advanced Java Networking or Real World Java 1.2 Networking

When I read technical books (and, being the nerd that I am, I read a lot of them), I prefer the books that treat me like a human being who wants to learn something. I prefer the books with a very straightforward, practical, hands-on approach, with lots and lots of useful examples, friendly, conversational writing, and a good sense of humor.
Java And XML: Chapter 9: Web Publishing Frameworks The world of web publishing frameworks is in such flux that trying to and even seeing vrml applications generated from XML is simply a matter of typing http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/javaxml/chapter/ch09.html
Extractions: This chapter begins our look at specific Java and XML topics. So far, we have covered the basics of using XML from Java, looking at the SAX and DOM APIs to manipulate XML and the fundamentals of using and creating XML itself. We've also looked at how JDOM can provide a more Java-centric means of using our XML data and documents within Java programs. Now that you have a grasp on using XML from your code, we will spend time on specific applications. The next six chapters represent the most significant applications of XML, and, in particular, how those applications are implemented in the Java space. While there are literally hundreds and soon to be thousands of important applications of XML, the topics in these chapters are those that continually seem to be in the spotlight, and that have a significant potential to change the way traditional development processes occur. We begin our look at these hot topics with the one XML application that seems to have generated the largest amount of excitement in the XML and Java communities: the web publishing framework. Although we have continually emphasized that generating presentation from content is perhaps over-hyped when compared to the value of the portable data that XML provides, using XML for presentation styling is still very important. This importance increases when looking at web-based applications.
