Most of us are looking for a way to make a difference in the world we live in. Teaching an adult to read is a satisfying way to do that. As a tutor, you help to "free a mind" to learn, to grow and achieve. You see a person "take wings" moving from self-doubt to self-confidence, from an "I can't do it" attitude to an "anything is possible" attitude. At the same time, YOU are learning, growing, achieving and gaining new perspectives on the world you live in. What b etter incentive could there be?
International Volunteering: Teach English Abroad volunteer Abroad in 19 countries Humanitarian Work in China, international community service projects and teach abroad opportunities worldwide http://www.globalvolunteers.org/1main/teach_english.htm
Extractions: If you're a native English speaker, you can be a valuable resource in a classroom in Africa, Asia, Europe, Mexico, or in ethnically diverse regions of the U.S. Even if you've never formally taught a classroom subject, you can teach conversational English skills. You don't need to know the language of the host country, or the methods of the local school system. All you need is enthusiasm and a desire to provide adult and youth students the advantages of knowing proper English pronunciation and usage. Often teaching is done through simple conversation along with a local teacher in school classrooms or at intensive summer camps where lessons take place in a variety of non-traditional settings. On some days, you'll meet your students for informal English language training. At other times, instructions may take the form of field trips, scavenger hunts, games or other organized events. Increasingly, English language skills have become crucial to success in virtually any profession, because it has become the international language of commerce and technology. Many students in our host communities study English, but few have the chance to practice with native English speakers to improve their pronunciation and ease with the language. Since 1990, Global Volunteers has provided valuable language assistance in English classrooms worldwide. The impact is long-lasting and dramatic...in fact, in some small villages of Poland and Vietnam, children would have no expsosure to the English language without Global Volunteers team members. And, now, after more than a decade, and more than 100 teams of volunteer teachers, those students are fluent English speakers. Their futures are more secure than ever.
