Volunteers come in all forms here at the San Antonio Zoo. What they all have in common is a love for the Zoo and a commitment to give their time for at least one year. The San Antonio Zoo does not accept individual episodic, community service, court appointed or short term volunteers. The Zoo is open 365 days a year so our volunteer opportunities are flexible and weekend opportunities are available year round. We currently have three categories of volunteers: College Interns, Adult Volunteers and Teen Volunteers. College Internships Internships can be challenging, rewarding, and fun. Our San Antonio Zoo internship program is designed to allow college students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. Internship opportunities are available throughout the year but positions are limited. There are typically positions open to all qualified students in our animal departments, horticulture, development, IT, education and many other departments. Application deadlines For Spring positions applications need to be received by December 28th Summer applications need to be received by May 10th , and Fall applications must be received by August 9th Commitments All interns work on a volunteer basis. However, credit hours may be earned depending on the intern's school policy regarding internships. Interns are required to work for a minimum of 200 hours, which equated to roughly 20 hours per week for 10 weeks or 40 hours per week for five weeks. Each intern's school requirements will be considered when determining a work schedule and the duration of the internship. Since the zoo operates seven days a week, candidates can anticipate working some weekend hours.

Heads Up Special Riders - 9/20/05 Experience the joy of helping children and adults with special needs build self-confidence, strength and coordination. Volunteers are needed for Heads Up Special Riders, a small therapeutic horseback-riding program located at Hasty Acres Farm in Kingston. Volunteers are the backbone of the Heads Up program, providing support to students and instructors. They greet students, assist with mounting and dismounting, lead horses, and help with horse care and preparation. Volunteers should have some experience around horses, and be 14 years or older (adults are welcome!) Training is provided.
