Extractions: A YMCA physical education teacher, William G. Morgan, in his attempt to find an indoor team game with a minimal risk of injury, invented the sport of Volleyball in 1895, at the YMCA branch of Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Its initial name was "Mintonette". Within a short period of time, however, and after an exhibition game took place, it was renamed to Volleyball. Description The aim of both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball games is to pass the ball over the net so that it hits the ground on the opponent's court, while preventing the opposing team from doing the same. There are two Volleyball disciplines: Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Volleyball competitions are held in indoor courts, by two teams of twelve, each with six players in the game and six on reserve. The competition area for each team measures 9 x 9 metres. Beach volleyball competitions are held in sandy courts, by two teams of two players each. The competition area for each team measures 8 x 8 metres.

The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the worldwide governing body for the sport of volleyball, is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and led by its president, Dr. Ruben Acosta H. The FIVB was founded in Paris in 1947 by 14 nations. Its first president, Paul Libaud, was succeeded by Dr. Acosta in 1984. In Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called "Mintonette" as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. It was not as rough as basketball, but still required quite a bit of athletic effort. After a demonstration given at the YMCA in nearby Springfield, the name "Mintonette" was replaced with "Volleyball." The rules as modified by W.E. Day were accepted and published by the YMCA. The height of the net went up to 7 feet 6 inches. Match length was set at 21 points. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball.

Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decides to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He creates the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrows the net from tennis, and raises it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. There are unconfirmed whispers of mens teams playing on the beach in Hawaii, but most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California where the first Volleyball courts are put up on the beach at the Playground. Families play 6 vs. 6. Beach Volleyball crosses the Atlantic Ocean. It becomes the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville, a north-western suburb of Paris. The first two-man beach volleyball game is played in Santa Monica, California. Beach volleyball appears in Palavas, Lacanau and Royan (France), around Sofia (Bulgaria), Prague (Czechoslavakia), and Riga (Latvia).

The NBC and CBC networks devoted many hours of air time to beach volleyball, which also drew large and lively crowds in Athens. The sport has been a huge success since making its Olympic debut in 1996. How do we explain this popularity? Brilliant feats of athleticism? Inspired competition? London's Sun newspaper has other ideas: "Todays beach volleyball lovelies barely wear a feather between them." So is it just cheap thrills? No way, says bronze medallist Elaine Youngs. "We are athletic girls," she tells the BBC. "Walking in the sand is difficult enough, so we have to train hard to do what we do." August 25, 2004
