Extractions: In 2005, the sport of Volleyball is 110 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played. William G. Morgan created the game of volleyball.
Extractions: U.S. players can't dance to Brazil's volleyball beat "We are winners," said Godoy Filho, who was named the tournament's most valuable player. "We were here for first place. Every player had this and only this in his mind. I am so happy." The Italians have been just about as good, but they've only managed a silver, bronze and silver at the last three Summer Games. Russia won this year's bronze by beating the United States in straight sets earlier Sunday. "We thought that we could change things in the fourth set, and maybe if we were lucky we could fight for the gold medal in the fifth set, but this is Brazil," said Italian middle blocker Luigi Mastrangelo, who pulled his blue jersey over his face and buried his head in his hands on the bench after Godoy Filho spiked the ball off libero Damiano Pippi on match point. Mastrangelo's block cut the fourth-set lead to 23-22, but the Italians couldn't get closer.

"We think chicks have finally gotten the message," said Sean, 31, interviewed during 10-minute station ID broadcast and three DSTV adverts. "Us viewers don't want to check a bunch of Russian lesbians in tracksuits throwing big lumps of lead and running for the gold. We want hot totty, bouncing breasts and skimpy costumes. "Women's volleyball gives us all this without a stupid plotline to get in the way. It's better than Baywatch. "I particularly enjoy it when they're not playing," said Sean. "You get those cool close-ups of the really sexy ones. The other day, I checked this one girl's fanny close-up for like, 10 seconds. It was awesome." Female volleyball players train for 6 hours every day for many years before they reach the skill levels and firm, bounciness required to compete in the Olympics. According to the rules of the game, players must all wear bellybutton-revealing bikinis and jump up and down as often as possible.

Medals table For a man, there can be few more unrewarding sports than becoming a beach volleyball player. A woman who wins a match or two can at least look forward to a double-page spread in Nuts magazine, a dubious accolade as one of the top 10 sexiest Olympians and the rapt attention of a testosterone-fuelled crowd who have bought into the biggest con in town. But for a man, beach volleyball is what you do between hangovers. It is the sport for men who can't windsurf. It's a way to pass the time when you didn't pull in the nightclub the previous night, or when you chose not to join your wife and kids at the dolphin park. It is as much an Olympic sport as a hand of three-card brag.
Extractions: The fast game became even faster Volleyball's popularity has recently been challenged by the emergence of the sport's beach variety In response to the change in status quo at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when beach volleyball proved a huge draw, the authorities revamped the traditional game. The basics remained the same, but a new position - the libero - was created in an effort to introduce longer rallies and more spectacular defensive play. Organisers also made the game even faster by decreeing that either side could score a point on any rally, irrespective of who is serving. Athens will feature two 12-team tournaments, with the countries split into two pools of six in both the men's and women's events. TOURNAMENT TEAMS Men

Athletes in volleyball benefit from the camaraderie of a team sport, and the athletic training enabling them to successfully serve and return a volleyball. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to the athletes ability level, age and gender. Volleyball, invented in the United States, has wide international appeal in Special Olympics. Take, for example, participation in the 1995 World Games: Over 500 athletes Compare that to the four female teams and eleven male teams in the 1987 World Games! Volleyball is one of the sports that encourages the development of Special Olympics Officials Program for Athletes®. This program involves interested Special Olympic athletes who want to become certified volleyball officials. These athletes take the same course and meet the same requirements set forth by the United States Volleyball Association for all volleyball officials and are then certified to officiate volleyball competitions. Volleyball stars Karch Kiraly and Bryan Ivie have been involved with Special Olympics, as have many universities. The Big 10 Conference in the United States officially entered a joint partnership with local Special Olympics Programs. Every school in the Big 10 conducted a volleyball clinic, welcomed Special Olympics athletes to their matches, and/or posed for pictures and signed autographs with local Special Olympics athletes. Special Olympics Volleyball is also supported by United States Volleyball. In 1996, Special Olympics International conducted the first Special Olympics Unified Sports® Volleyball Invitational as part of the USA National Open Volleyball Championships in Dallas, Texas.

Extractions: For many sports, it has been observed certain countries are strong in those sports at the international level due to the presence of a large base of grass root participants. The sports do not have to be popular nationally, for it suffices to have a strong base in certain regions. In the case of the United States of America, volleyball is a prominent sporting tradition due to the fact the game is highly popular in the climatically suitable west coast. Thus, the core of the national team of the USA appears to have come from college players from institutions such as the University of California campuses at Long Beach, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Pepperdine University, Stanford University and the University of Southern California. Brazil has a strong tradition in the sport of volleyball, with teams being world champions in indoor volleyball as well as beach volleyball. It has been conjectured that the strength of Brazilian volleyball was in fact built around the culture associated with people playing beach volleyball all day at the famous beaches such as those in Rio de Janeiro.
