Extractions: Austin Readers for School Libraries, Austin, TX The mission of the Austin Readers for School Libraries is to "encourage and facilitate children's reading, to instill a passion for books, and to promote libraries as strong, vital institutions that are central to the well being of their schools and community." In 1995, the Board of the Austin ISD threatened to cut library positions in several of the city's smaller elementary schools. One parent, Virginia Raymond, made an impassioned plea before the Austin Independent School District Board to retain the staff. A school library supporter on the board was so impressed with Ms. Raymond that he suggested she reach out to other parents who shared her belief in the importance of quality library service in the schools. Thus the Austin Readers for School Libraries were born. Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School Friends of the Library

In It are students, teachers, and library media Specialists as well as books, reference tools, audiovisual and electronic resources. There is but a single motivation in bringing all these factors together: the effective access and use of information and ideas. The new Information Power II (American Library Association, 1998) informs the school librarian that the mission of the library media program is to "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." In the swiftly moving world of information, library instruction must now be fashioned to achieve that goal. Librarians with files full of lesson plans on the illustrious Mr. Dewey and the Reader's Guide have found themselves waking up on the wrong side of the bed with the new dawning of curriculum integration of library skills. It is widely accepted that library skills should not be taught in isolation. Collaboration is now the shape of library instruction. This type of library instruction integrates Information Literacy Skills with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Extractions: Building Types Index Libraries Public Library Academic Library School Library Presidential Library Related Resource Pages Print Email OVERVIEW School libraries differ from most other types of libraries because they are contained within school buildings , which, in addition to library space, may include classrooms, auditoriums, circulation space, administrative offices, cafeterias, and the like. As a result, school libraries, or library media centers (LMCs) as they are commonly called, are smaller than their counterparts. Appropriate space planning for present needs and future expansion is imperative in the school library program. According to a study by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, computer and video technology, in addition to other forms of media including print material, is an important part of education. Use of technology in classrooms and in the library must include design aspects that support learning, including adjustable lighting ample electrical connections sound control , and space for expansion . School library space must also accommodate computer learning that is separated from quiet reading, group study, circulation, reference work, and other learning activities.
