Extractions: There are four major watersheds in the Mid-Atlantic: the Ohio River basin draining to the Gulf of Mexico, the Delaware Bay, the Roanoke and Chowan River basins draining to the Ablemarle-Pamlico Sound, and the Chesapeake Bay. All of these watersheds have stream segments identified as impaired by nutrients. The nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus cause eutrophication, which results in excessive algal growth and low oxygen conditions in rivers and estuaries, often resulting in local fish kills. Nutrients can also threaten drinking water supplies, especially in rural areas with poorly protected drinking water sources. Chemical pollution is also a problem in many of the rivers within the Mid-Atlantic region. Chemicals can come from a variety of sources, and can harm plants, animals, fish and humans in different ways. Certain kinds of chemicals can affect the reproduction, development and survival of fish and other living resources. Some chemicals can accumulate in fish and other animal tissues, and in bottom sediments in rivers and estuaries. Developed areas and household activities can contribute both nutrients and chemical contaminants to local waterways, and ultimately to major estuaries, like the Chesapeake Bay. Nutrients and chemicals from septic systems, lawn fertilizers, household cleaners and pest treatments, and automobile exhaust can contribute to water pollution. Stormwater running off from paved surfaces like roads, driveways and parking lots funnel many of these pollutants directly to waterways.

The county has a program for recruiting houses of worship as sponsors of a family on welfare. The faith-based organization agrees to be a sponsor and receives a six-month lump sum of the family's cash assistance in place of what the family would ordinarily receive. The sponsor then helps the family use the assistance wisely to get back on the road to self-sufficiency. The sponsoring organization receives no fees to help cover administrative costs, so it is purely voluntary on the part of the organization. Specifically, Anne Arundel County doesn't pay churches, but it allows them to use county money to help welfare recipients. Genesis Jobs, supported by the Episcopal Church of the Guardian Angel, has been successful in finding jobs for low-income workers. It has scrimped and scraped for funds from private donors, refusing to seek government money. Now for the first time, the state has been referring some job-seekers to Genesis Jobs and has asked Genesis Jobs to train some of its workers, using federal funds. "This new turn of events appears to allow us to be flexible and innovative. The doors have been opened," says Emily Thayer, Director of Genesis Jobs.

Extractions: You are visitor A separate and distinct area of gardening is that of the Master Gardener - the voluntary arm of the Agricultural Extension Services. As a Past President and member of the Harris County Master Gardener Association (Houston, Texas), I am more familiar with the Texas Master Gardener program but Master Gardening is nationwide in scope and on this page I will be attempting to put it all together. I am often asked the question, "Who and what are 'Master Gardeners'"? The following comments, questions and answers are geared primarily to the Texas Master Gardener Program. However, with slight differences, they also apply to all 50 states since all now have "Master Gardener Programs". They also generally apply in the four Canadian provinces with the program except for the sponsorship of Cooperative Extension agencies. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticulture-related information to their communities.
