Here, lodged securely between mountains in Vermonts Northeast Kingdom, stands a school as old and traditional as most any in the nation. Its boys don button-down broadcloth and ties for morning chapel. Its girls recite Virgil in the same halls where a young Calvin Coolidge, class of 1891, absorbed his Latin. Yet this school, the St. Johnsbury Academy, is also a voucher school and has been one for well over a century. Indeed, it is a thriving voucher school: This decade, the academy marked its sesquicentennial by expanding its student body to 1,000 from 750.

Unfortunately, although the laws emphasize broad partnerships, youth with disabilities and their advocates are not often represented in the partnerships. Additionally, while some of the data on youth with disabilities is encouraging for example, of youth in school-to-work programs nationwide, 11% are youth with disabilities; and their high school graduation rates and postsecondary enrollment rates have increased 36% of youth with disabilities fail to complete high school; only 17% attend post-secondary education vs. 68% of the national population; numbers for college completion are essentially unknown; and small numbers of youth with disabilities are competitively employed with employment prospects much worse for older adults with disabilities.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Robert and Betty Garrow of Braintree; his mother and stepfather, Linda Spooner and Burton Spooner Jr. of Randolph; his grandmother, Geraldine Trombley of Cadyville, N.Y.; two half brothers, Robert Garrow Jr. of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Burton Spooner III of Williamstown; a half sister, Lisa Garrow of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Godzik, Anna M. (Callahan), 86, of Danvers, MA, died Aug. 25, at Salem Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born in Duxbury, Vt., on June 25, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Jessie (Morse) Callahan. She graduated from Waterbury High School. She was a longtime resident of Danvers, having resided there for almost 70 years. She was the wife of the late Frank Godzik. She was employed for 15 years at the LaSallette Gift Shop in Ipswich until her retirement in 1996. She was active at the Danvers Senior Center and in the LaSallette Faith Community. She is survived by two sons, Frank Godzik of Orlando, Fla., and Stephen Godzik of Danvers; two sisters, Mary Reagan of Waterbury, Vt., and Tina Wilder of Duxbury, Vt.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased earlier this month by a daughter, Jean George.

The automotive repair industry needs qualified female employees to help lower its employment deficit, and we should not lose these potential employees due to outdated stereotypes. Estimate the projected deficit in technicians within the automotive repair industry over the next 10 years. Does around 50,000 employees sound right? How about 100,000? Not even close. Over the next 10 years the projected deficit in automotive repair technicians is a whopping 418,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook. Women account for nearly half of today's work force. Why, in an industry desperately in need of qualified employees, are there so few female automotive repair technicians? The National Women's Law Center appears to have found the answer. A report released by the center June 6 examines sex bias in high school vocational and technical programs, a violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Saying that the cost of retooling state education assessments to meet federal education requirements could exceed the state's federal education allocation and expressing concern about stipulations in the federal law, Vermont governor Howard Dean is considering rejecting federal aid rather than complying with the requirements. Vermont currently receives about $53.7 million in federal aid including $21.4 million in Title I money plus other federal grants and assistance that will be affected by the No Child Left Behind Act.
