Extractions: and the World" Vermont Law School's Environmental Law Center offers one of the best environmental law and policy programs in the country. The mission of the Environmental Law Center is to educate for stewardship and an understanding of underlying environmental issues and values. Environmental law and policy are about change, and since change is often threatening to those who benefit from the status quo, it is no surprise that consensus on environmental issues is difficult to achieve. An environmental professional must understand that sound environmental policy is formed at the intersection of politics, law, science, economics, and ethics. In the Environmental Law program students explore the ethical basis for environmental policy, develop a knowledge of ecological concepts, and consider both international issues, and standards and processes embodied in U.S. environmental law. Students learn political, cultural, institutional, and scientific mechanisms which shape environmental policy, as well as recognize the role and effects of hazard, risk, and uncertainty in policy development. Since the late 1970s, with the advent of video technology, media center management in higher education has been defined by rapid and constant change. While academic administrators scrambled to locate funding for the latest in hardware, little attention was given to such essential issues as media literacy education and the effect on media archives caused by increasingly shorter life spans of media formats. Bill Schubert, President of Resolution, Inc., will address some of the complex issues media educators have faced and will challenge the audience to think about the implications of rapidly-expanding technology on issues such as intellectual property, mass media ownership, popular culture in the classroom, collection access, and media cataloging. The Dorothy Canfield Children's Book Award, first given in 1957, is co-sponsored by the Vermont State PTA and the Vermont Department of Libraries. These books, to be read during the present school year, comprise the master list for the award in the Spring. Voting forms for this master list are mailed to all Vermont schools and public libraries in the spring, so children can vote for their favorite book. The master list titles have been selected to satisfy the reading interests of children in grades 4-8; the grades listed should be regarded more as maturity levels than reading levels. The Dorothy Canfield Fisher books are carefully selected and highly recommended by committee, but because maturity level and interest level may vary from community to community, each library chooses the books in accordance with its own selection policy.
