Norwich is one of the exceptions and in a very substantial sense the institution today is the lengthened shadow of its founder, Captain Alden Partridge. The educational philosophy of Alden Partridge continues to guide Norwich University on its 175th anniversary and serves as a touchstone by which the university can be measured and appraised. Among the deficiencies Partridge saw in traditional "liberal education" was that it was too restrictive and not liberal enough. The standard curriculum was not sufficiently practical and was not designed to prepare youth for the duties of an American citizen. The existing system of education was deficient because it did not give adequate attention to such matters as the operations of government or to the important sources of national wealth—"agriculture, commerce, and manufacturers."

(www.greenmtvetsforpeace.org) Remember elections didn't end the Vietnam War! It was a mass movement of peoplestudents, teachers, parents and children, civil rights activists, union members, anti-war veterans from Vietnam and other periods of recent imperial history, acts of refusal by draft resisters and rebelllion by active duty soldiers and finally the continued resistance of the Vietnamese Independence movement. For more than 30 years the Vietnamese fought the imperialism of France, Japan, France again (with U.S. financing) and finallyafter preventing an election that Ho Chi Minh would have won overwhelminglythe 10 year U.S. war on Vietnam was pre-emptively started. Before it was over more than 3 million Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians were dead as well as nearly 60,000 Americans. Never again!!! O ur Green Mountain chapter was formed on March 16, 1991 in response to the devastating U.S. war against Iraq. We took part in anti-war activities across Vermont that year. In the following years we carried out counter military recruitment activities in the the high schools and debated pro-war and pro-imperialist speakers and government officials in public settings and on TV and radio. We have marched as an anti-war alternative to the various veterans for war organizations in Memorial Day and 4th of July and Gay/Lesbian Pride parades across the state. We have traveled to Washington, D.C. for anti-war and anti-corporate globalization protests in recent years (see photos below).

The LDU meets every Monday night at 6 PM at 475 Main Street. The goal of the Lawrence Debate Union is to facilitate the personal growth and development of its members as well as the community they constitute. This is done through the method of debate, and a lot of it is competitive debate. However, that does not mean that there is not a lot of competitive success surrounding the program, and on a national level. These results stand as a stark empirical testament to what UVM student debaters have done this year. While it is useful to see how Vermont did and who finished ahead of Vermont it is also very useful to note the many school of tremendous academic repute that finished behind Vermont. Most of the schools in the top fifty have larger budgets than Vermont and almost all recruit high school debaters using extensive scholarships which Vermont does not do. These observations are simply made to point out the accomplishment of Vermont students rather than to complain.

Charitable Venture Foundation, joined by several local sources, has supported the work of the 12 AESP schools. A comprehensive assessment of AESP was completed in June 2005 and is reported in a monograph written by David Holmes and Rick Dalton, entitled Peak Experiences: Raising Aspirations and Educational Achievement of Rural Youth in Adirondack Communities , published in August 2005. In 2005-06, the expanded Adirondack Scholars initiative will involve a total of 20 central schools, each targeting a cohort of at least 50 students to participate in program activities. Adirondack Scholars is funded by Charitable Venture Foundation and the Daniels Fund, as well as other sources. As in AESP, regional colleges will partner with the schools to help them strengthen student performance and raise educational aspirations. These colleges include Clarkson, Clinton Community, North Country Community, Saint Lawrence, Skidmore, Paul Smith's, SUNY Plattsburgh, and Union in New York; Middlebury, Castleton State, and Saint Michael's in Vermont; and Williams in Massachusetts.

It was from my school district, and buried in the ad's fine print was an announcement that the local high school would be sending the names and phone numbers for all juniors and seniors to U.S. military recruiters. This is more than a back-door assault on student privacy. It may have life-or-death consequences for unwitting kids who are contacted by recruiters. This student information give-away was mandated in a little-known provision of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, President Bush's sweeping education law. The law went into effect in 2002, but many schools only became aware of the obscure military recruiting provision in the last year. Schools risk losing all federal aid if they fail to provide military recruiters full access to their students; the aid is contingent on complying with federal law. This recruiting access provision is different from draft registration. Military conscription ended in 1973, but starting in 1980, 18-year-old males have been required to register for possible military call-up.

Extractions: showNetworkBanner(1); var story_id = 886692; Home News By Danielle Sokol Published: Tuesday, March 1, 2005 With the second anniversary of the war in Iraq approaching, there has been increasing attention being paid to escalating violence and destruction in Iraq and the growing resistance movement among students and military members to the war. There also has been significant discussion of the overextension of the U.S military and the possibility of a draft. Although it seems unlikely that the Bush administration is going to reinstate the draft and commit political suicide right now, it is important for individuals to be aware of what is happening in Iraq and the work that is being done in the US to demilitarize our society and schools, and accelerate resistance to this war and occupation.
