In addition, we house a variety of district-wide programs including the Early Education Program for children with emotional/behavioral disabilities, and the Lighthouse Project, a K-6 multi-age program in which parents within the Bennington School District can choose to enroll their children. Although we have a diverse population of students and families, more than half of all children at the school live in poverty. Many of our children live in public or subsidized housing. The process began with a needs assessment for its community and collaborative planning with Sunrise Family Resource Center, Bennington Head Start, Bennington College, Bennington Tutorial Center, Vermont Department of Health, and the Vermont Agency of Human Services. The result has been secured resources for the following programs: * two mentoring programs, one with our students and local community members from Hemmings Motor News, a local business, and the PALS Program which pairs up high school students with our students for a school year

Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award The Dorothy Canfield Children's Book Award, first given in 1957, is co-sponsored by the Vermont State PTA and the Vermont Department of Libraries. These books, to be read during the school year, comprise the master list for the award to be made each spring. Voting forms for this master list will be mailed to all Vermont schools and public libraries in spring, so children can vote for their favorite book. The master list titles have been selected to satisfy the reading interests of children in grades 4-8; The grades listed should be regarded more as maturity levels than reading levels. The Dorothy Canfield Fisher books are carefully selected and highly recommended by a committee of eight, but because maturity level and interest level may vary from community to community, each library should choose the books in accordance with its own selection policy.

Hate: Stop It Outright undertakes outreach to schools, youth serving agencies, and communities in order to identify, develop and train allies for GLBTQ youth, and create safe environments for all youth. Our educational presentations for youth and adults are conducted in public and alternative schools, treatment centers, public and private youth serving agencies, and community-based organizations throughout the state. These presentations take the form of panel discussions, workshops, school-wide assemblies, and half- and full-day in service trainings.
