[26-03-2004] By Kay Grigar Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s In this edition I stepped out to Divadlo Ypsilon, a more melodic name than its English counterpart Theatre "Y". It has been in existence since 1963 and last week the theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary where actors from the company put on an informal performance. Snippets from the theatre's repertoire were played for the occasion exhibiting the versatility and the musicality of all the performers. I spoke with Jan Jiran who has been a resident actor and musical director at Divaldo Ypsilon for almost twenty years. He describes the theatre as having a "special" kind of humour.

Extractions: Archive: Previous shows at this theatre The current Vaudeville Theatre in The Strand is actually the third theatre to have been built on this site - although each theatre, when built, has kept a substantial part of the previous building! The original Vaudeville Theatre was designed by C J Phipps and opened on 16 April 1870. This theatre, which had a capacity of 1000, was built behind the then existing facade facing onto The Strand, with alterations to this elevation only being made on the ground floor to accommodate an entrance into the theatre which was built behind. Barely twenty years later The Vaudeville Theatre was closed down and reconstructed, to designs once again by the architect C J Phipps, and reopened on 13 January 1891. This time it was the frontage onto The Strand that was replaced with an impressive four-storey high frontage in Portland Stone, which remains down to this day. The horse-shoe shaped auditorium remained the same except for some remodelling. The capacity of this second Vaudeville Theatre was around 740. This theatre lasted for some thirty four years before it was closed in November 1925 and the interior was completely gutted. The Portland Stone frontage was left untouched, but the horseshoe-shaped auditorium was lengthen at both ends and made narrower to became oblong shaped in an Adamsque style. In addition the stage area was also reconfigured. This design work was done by the architect Robert Atkinson.

Extractions: Remember Gypsy ? Here are the real " Baby June" Havoc and her sister Louise (a.k.a. Gypsy Rose Lee) with two of their "newsboys." Contrary to popular belief, Vaudeville was not wiped out by silent films. Many managers featured "flickers" at the end of their bills, finding them cheaper than the live closing acts that audiences walked out on anyway. Top screen stars made lucrative personal appearance tours on the big time circuits. So what killed vaudeville? The most truthful answer is that the public's tastes changed and vaudeville's managers (and most of its performers) failed to adjust to those changes. In the mid-1920s, when everyone knew vaudeville was in danger, E.F. Albee set expensive new production requirements which strained performers and made it harder for most houses to turn a profit. When fashion-plate comics entertained between numbers instead of a roaring slapstick turn, vaudeville was devitalized. Cycloramas, drapery and gorgeous drops added to the glamour, but not to the comedy. Albee was responsible for much of this. He dressed up vaudeville fit to kill and it committed suicide . . . the customers stopped coming.

Extractions: Vaudeville was a style of multi-act theater which flourished in North America from the through the . An evening's "bill" (or schedule of performances) could run the gamut from acrobats to mathematicians, from song-and-dance duos to trick high divers. Indeed, the scope of the presentations was unique in the history of American live performance: music, comedy, feats of athleticism, magic , animal acts, opera Shakespeare , banjo, acrobatics and gymnastics , and lectures by celebrities and intellectuals of every scale. A bill usually began with a dumb act (e.g., acrobats, trick bicyclists), allowing late arriving audience members to find their seats without interrupting important dialogue; peaked in the penultimate spot with the "headliner" (the biggest draw on the bill and focus of that week's publicity effort); and might conclude with a "chaser", an act considered admirable enough to feature but dull enough to chase the audience from the theatre, an important role in houses that offered continuously revolving performances. edit edit Though often confused with variety, its generically distinct predecessor (c.
