In 1836, Jackson withdrew federal deposits from the Bank of America in Philadelphia and allotted it to banks around the country and removed restrictions on inflationary practices of some state banks. This created a boom in investments initially, but it led to a bust when consumer confidence in banks dwindled. During Van Buren's presidency hundreds of banks and other businesses failed in what was at the time the worst depression the U.S. history. Also during Van Buren's term a boundary dispute with Canada erupted, relations between the U.S. and Mexico grew tense due to a dispute over what later became Texas, and "the Trail of Tears" led to the death or forced removal of thousands of Native Americans from their homes. In 1840 Van Buren was soundly defeated by a campaign by William Henry Harrison and John Tyler ("Tippecanoe and Tyler too"). In 1848, Van Buren made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency as candidate for the the Free-Soil Party, a party of Northerners opposed to the expansion of slavery into the western territories.

Hardworking, quick at collecting and absorbing facts, and a good judge of character, Martin Van Buren was in his early career an exceptionally able trial lawyer who gained a reputation for his political skills. Van Buren at first supported Aaron Burr in his efforts to break the influence of the great families that had ruled New York for several generations. But soon discovering that Burr was doomed to defeat, he changed sides and allied himself with DeWitt Clinton, then the rising star in New York politics. Constantly on the move attending sessions of the various courts, Van Buren widened his acquaintances among lawyers and officials throughout the state and utilized this network to build a political organization. For many years known as the "Albany Regency," it dominated the politics of the state. Van Buren's novel tactics, his patronage policies, and his understanding of communication and discipline anticipated modern political practices. As such, he was the principle architect of the second American party system.

His father was a farmer and tavern-keeper. His education was limited to that which could be obtained in the common schools and at Kinderhook Academy, and there is testimony to the effect that as late as 1829, when he became secretary of state, he wrote crudely and incorrectly. Extractions: Few people ever really knew Martin Van Buren. The impeccable attire, ready wit, and unfailing tact that set him apart from his contemporaries masked a nagging sense of insecurity that dogged him throughout his political career. His father, a tavern keeper of modest means, had been able to provide him with only a rudimentary education. One of Van Buren's better-educated associates observed that his "knowledge of books outside of his profession was more limited than that of any other public man" he had ever known and that Van Buren never prepared a state paper without asking a friend to "revise and correct that document." Van Buren received his real education in the turbulent and factious world of New York politics, and he was an apt pupil. He learned to hold his counsel as others debated the hotly contested issues of the day, carefully observing the course of a debate and weighing all of the issues before staking out a position of his own. "Even after deciding on a course of action," one scholar has observed, "Van Buren might move with an air of evasiveness." Circumspect to a fault, he "enjoyed a name for noncommittalism that survived when most other things about him were forgotten." Reviled as a "schemer" and a master "manipulator" by contemporaries who lacked (and probably envied) his uncanny political acumen, he was known throughout his career by an unparalleled assortment of nicknames, none of them entirely favorable. But "the Little Magician" (also known as "the American Talleyrand," "the Red Fox of Kinderhook," the "Mistletoe Politician," and by a variety of other sobriquets) left a solid record of accomplishment that few of his better-known fellows could rival. More than any other individual of his time, Van Buren realized the importance of party organization, discipline, and political patronage. He engineered
