Extractions: A question and answers from teachers for making Valentin e's Day more inclusive and caring Q: Holidays can sometimes be a mixed blessing in schools. For example, students love to exchange cards on Valentines Day but every year there are problems. Sometimes the exchange seems too competitive and often there are students who feel left out. Other times, it seems like all were doing is supporting the greeting card industry and parents complain about the cost of getting cards for the entire class. As I think about how to celebrate Valentines Day, Id love to hear about strategies that put the emphasis on inclusivity and caring rather than on favoritism and money.

In this experience, I have been reminded of some of the basic truths that make teaching such a wonderful experience. With every challenge, there are limitless opportunities. With every struggle, there are potential future accomplishments. With every unanswered question, there are endless possibilities. Each experience of interacting with a child in the process of learning brings both responsibility and reward. I have thought a lot this week about the partnerships between parents and teachers. Through my experiences within classrooms I am reminded that there is a strong bond that is based in these responsibilities and rewards. Working together, parents and staff have the chance to share the wonderful experience of teaching children. To watch the process of teaching and learning is great to actually be part of it is a gift.

We've Got Mail! Kids teaching kids how to use the KidPix tools was a very powerful element My intention was to do that after Valentine s day, but then I put it away. http://ali.apple.com/ali_sites/deli/exhibits/1000315/Reflections.html
Extractions: Student Reflection I asked the students to tell me what they liked about the personal letterhead lesson we had just finished. Five-year-olds live in the here and now and clearly reflected what they had just done. You can hear how my students feel about using computers in their projects! Parent Reflection I asked the father of one of my students to talk about the making of the personal stationery and the writing of letters. This dad volunteers in my classroom a great deal, spending one morning each week in the classroom helping students to publish stories on the computer. The time he had been able to spend in the classroom made him a very knowledgeable observer of instruction in this kindergarten. Teacher Reflection I am very pleased with the effectiveness of this writing unit. Twenty out of twenty-nine students chose to write at least five letters on their own. Twenty-five kindergarten students began to become comfortable with friendly letter writing. Every kindergarten student had attempted at least one letter. Creating and producing something that was uniquely their own (the personal stationery) was a great motivator for many students. I have taught this unit without the creation of the personal letterhead in the past, and had not seen this level of interest and participation. One child in particular who really struggles with fine motor tasks was extremely motivated. She wrote nearly a letter a day for a few weeks. She even asked to write letters at her center time.
