Extractions: On Monday, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. fired the first shot in what may become a national rebellion against the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Resisting intense veto pressure from President Bush and federal regulators, Huntsman signed into law a bill that will prioritize Utah's own educational goals over the mandates of the federal act. To preserve its freedom to chart the future of its schools, the Beehive State, Huntsman signaled, is willing to say no to Washington's money. The article that the Tribune wrote on it started out with many Judge McConnell qoute on how Democracy isn't working. That we've become so polarized that the middle ground isn't suitable for anyone anymore: Speaking Wednesday at the University of Utah's "Free Speech and Democracy on Campus" symposium, McConnell suggested the absence of respectful civil discussions among politically diverse people contributes to the president's being labeled a "liar and compared to Hitler and the Nazis." These are "signs that democracy is not working very well," McConnell said, noting that conservatives are turning to Fox News and The Wall Street Journal for their news while liberals are reading The New York Times and watching PBS. Wonderful. I agree whole-heartedly. So how did an article that started out so promising deteriorate into this? McConnell wasn't alone in expressing concerns about the nation's growing political divisiveness. Joining him at the symposium were former U.S. Rep. Karen Shepherd, D-Utah, filmmaker Steven Greenstreet, Weber State University President F. Ann Millner and U. President Michael Young.

Extractions: Utah Governor Mike Leavitt Tapped to Lead EPA WASHINGTON, DC, August 11, 2003 (ENS) - Utah Governor Mike Leavitt, a Republican who favors strengthening the power of states over environmental regulation, has been chosen by President George W. Bush to be administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If confirmed by the Senate, Leavitt will replace former EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman, a former governor of New Jersey who resigned in May. Environmental groups reacted to the nomination with disappointment and warnings that the nominee must assure the nation he will not cater to developers. Business organizations were generally pleased with the President's choice. Announcing his choice for the EPA's top post today at the Marriott Hotel in Aurora, Colorado, President Bush said, "I selected Mike Leavitt because he is a trusted friend, a capable executive and a man who understands the obligations of environmental stewardship. With the Senate's approval, Mike Leavitt will lead an agency with 18,000 dedicated employees in offices all across our country." Accepting the nomination, Governor Leavitt told a story about visiting the Grand Canyon when he was eight years old and then again 36 years later as governor of Utah. "This time," he said, "there was a brown haze across the same place where that beautiful clear vista had been before. This time, I was there to co-chair a commission that had been charged under the Clean Air Act to rescue that view."
