KEY DEPARTMENT NEWS NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's) Cooperative Weather Observer Program Receives National Recognition From The Weather Channel. Beginning on December 5, 2001, The Weather Channel will honor a National Weather Service "Cooperative Weather Observer of the Month" in a monthly feature during its prime-time "Evening Edition" news broadcast. Dr. Jerome Thaler, from Westchester County, NY, is the first honoree to be featured. Dr. Thaler has been an active cooperative observer with the National Weather Service (NWS) since 1964. The Weather Channel is scheduled to interview five additional cooperative observers in monthly segments in 2002. The NWS Cooperative Weather Observer Program is comprised of volunteers who are the backbone of the nation's weather network. Over 11,000 observers record air and soil temperature, rainfall, snowfall, snow depth, river levels, and evaporation. The data is used to monitor local weather, predict climate trends, and is used by many sectors of the economy, including agricultural assessments and utility planning.
