St. Thomas is 40 miles to the north of St. Croix. It is 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. St. John is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. Two-thirds of St. John is a national park donated to the government in 1956 by philanthropist Laurance S. Rockefeller. Water Island sits just off the southwest coast of St. Thomas and is almost exclusively a residential community. HISTORY: It was 1493 during Christopher Columbus' second voyage to the New World when these islands first became known to the European community. Over the centuries that followed, Spain, France, England, The Netherlands, Denmark took turns controlling the region. The United States purchased the islands from Denmark for $25 million in 1917. At that time, the US government was concerned this area might become a German submarine base if Denmark fell to the Germans during World War I. Since that time, the islands have remained a US territory.

All homes using cisterns must also have a pump to pump the water into the house. Learning how to prime a pump is something that may come in handy. And that's weird, as even American Samoa shows a proper colored bald eagle (not to mention Illinois, Utah, Iowa or New York...).
