This project is supported by the Smith Richardson Foundation and builds on the work done for the CSIS Strategic Energy Initiative, the CSIS Net Assessment of the Middle East, and the Gulf in Transition Project. It is being conducted in conjunction with a separate - but closely related study called the Middle East Energy and Security Project. The project is being conducted by Anthony H. Cordesman, the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy, It uses a net assessment approach that looks at all of the major factors affecting Saudi Arabia's strategic, political, economic, and military position and future implications of current trends.      Extractions: Table: Democracy in the Twentieth Century The Findings Political scientists who point to the proliferation of democratically elected governments around the world since the mid-1970s refer to ours as the “democratic age.” But the data presented in this end-of-the-century report make clear that ours has not only been a century of bloody struggle between peoples and ideologies, but that it also has been a century of struggle for national sovereignty and for the individual’s democratic sovereignty within the state. In a very real sense, the 20th century has become the “Democratic Century.” The findings herein are significant. They show a dramatic expansion of democratic governance over the course of the century. This political trend has been matched by significant economic progress associated with the expansion of market economies. Like economic progress, political progress has been uneven. But the general trends are hard to ignore. They reinforce the conclusion that humankind, in fits and starts, is rejecting oppression and opting for greater openness and freedom. As depicted in the accompanying graphs and charts, the 20th century has seen a significant expansion of democratically elected governments and a dramatic expansion in the number of sovereign states. In 1900, there were no states which could be judged as electoral democracies by the standard of universal suffrage for competitive multiparty elections. The U.S., Britain, and a handful of other countries possessed the most democratic systems, but their denial of voting rights to women, and in the case of the U.S. to black Americans meant that they were countries with restricted democratic practices. The states with restricted democratic practices were 25 in number and accounted for just 12.4 percent of the world population. In 1900 monarchies and empires predominated.

     Extractions: Studies in Scarlet The Marriage, Women, and the Law collection is the result of a collaborative project of the Research Libraries Group's law community . This page provides free, demonstration access to it. With a focus on family law and domestic relations in the 19th century, the collection provides scholars throughout the world with electronic access to materials supporting research on a broad range of topics, including marriage, divorce, adultery, miscegenation, polygamy, and birth control. The content of the collection, gleaned from case reports, statutes, novels, newspapers, diaries, and letters, is designed to support scholarship in disciplines including law, history, sociology, political science, women's studies, and criminology. The strength of this collection is the extent, quality, and cohesion of the content. Seven major research institutions in the United States and Great Britain contributed primary and secondary materials: The New York Public Library focused its contribution on materials that document the social conventions and status of women in the 19th century. The New York Public Library also contributed case law from New York courts that played a significant role in establishing critical family law legal precedents in jurisdictions throughout the United States.
