Annual Postdoctoral Fellows Research Forum Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has long been a leader in research. Since before Albert Sabin perfected his oral polio vaccine in the 1950s and 1960s, researchers at the Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation have made breakthrough discoveries that have changed medicine forever. l l l Revealed the genetic underpinning to biliary atresia , the most common reason for liver transplant in children. Developed a genital herpes vaccine that was 75 percent effective in female patients during trials and may help prevent the spread of the virus from mother to newborn. A genetically engineered vaccine is the first to be proved effective in protecting newborns, in an animal model, against cytomegalovirus (CMV) , the most common congenital viral infection in the United States. In 1894, six years after Hertz discovered radio waves , Sir Oliver Lodge announced that he hoped to detect radio waves from the sun. He apparently tried during 1897-1900, but experienced "instrumentation problems" similar to those familiar to the users of radio telescopes. About 45 years later, in 1945, George Southworth of Bell Laboratories detected the solar radio waves that Lodge had suggested. (See: G.C. Southworth, "Microwave radiation from the sun", J. One who studies evolutionary biology is known as an evolutionary biologist , or less frequently evolutionist Evolutionary biology is a kind of meta field because it includes scientists from many traditional taxonomically -oriented disciplines. For example, it generally includes scientists who may have a specialist training in particular organism s such as mammalogy ornithology , or herpetology but use those organisms as systems to answer general questions in evolution. It also generally includes paleontogists who use fossil s to answer questions about the mode and tempo of evolution, as well as theoreticians in areas such as population genetics and evolutionary theory. We concentrate on collecting titles within our areas of interest that are not available in most easily accessible libraries. Some of our more common titles are held offsite to make more room for more unusual or scarcer titles. Other magazines are held onsite because of their research value, high degree of interest, or useful content such as advertisements, illustrations and graphics. Following is a list of periodicals we hold, arranged by subject. This list is still in draft form and we expect to add many new titles, plus specific holdings information on each title, as we continue to organize the library. Please contact us for information on holdings and availability of specific titles. The Prelinger Library welcomes donations of materials that help to complete our collections of periodicals and zines in our areas of interest. We also hold a number of periodical indexes, including:

During its most productive years, the ISS had active chapters on many campuses across the country, particularly in the eastern and Midwestern states. As a socialist educational organization, the ISS established numerous study and reading groups, sponsored rallies and lecture engagements for prominent socialists, published book lists and pamphlets relating to a variety of socialist issues, and held occasional national meetings and annual conventions. In 1921, the ISS changed its name to the League for Industrial Democracy so as to reflect its then older constituency and broader objectives."

Questions And Answers About Multiple Sclerosis Study El Paso Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Study Questions and Answers of El Paso in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s and because of related environmental concerns. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/epitox/studyqanda.shtm
Extractions: Epitox Home Page Q. Why was this study done? A. We conducted this study because of a report of a possible cluster (unusual number of cases) of multiple sclerosis (MS) among children who grew up in the Kern PlaceĀMission Hills area of El Paso in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s and because of related environmental concerns. Q. What did this study find? A. We found 14 cases of definite and probable MS among former Mesita students. Based on national MS prevalence estimates, we would have expected to see only seven cases. Overall, for former Mesita students, there were twice as many people with MS as we would have expected to find, based on national rates. No cases were reported for the E.B. Jones cohort. Q. Why are there more cases of MS than expected among the former Mesita students? A. We do not know. This study was designed only to identify and count the number of MS cases to determine if there was a true excess of cases. The number of MS cases that were found was not big enough to allow the scientific investigation of possible causes. We are currently working with other states to find out if a larger study pooling multiple MS clusters would allow us to study the causes of MS. Q. Am I more likely to get MS because I attended Mesita?

Letter to Participants This study was designed to (1) identify the number of people with MS in the school cohorts, (2) determine if the number of people with MS was more than we would expect based on national prevalence estimates, and (3) review historic environmental and biologic sampling data. We identified and confirmed 14 cases of MS among former Mesita students. No cases were reported among former E.B. Jones students. The number of people with MS among former Mesita students is twice as high as expected, based on national estimates. We were able to identify limited historic environmental and biological data for the study area. These results are reported in a separate addendum to the report. This study was not designed to investigate the specific cause or causes of MS and the results cannot tell us why there is an excess of MS among the former Mesita students. Based on the findings of this study, we recommend four activities:

Notice the sandals and stripped ankle socks. Major changes occurred in boys' fashions in the period from World War II through the 1960s. Boys moved from short pants and knickers to long pants. By the end of the period only very small boys were dressing up in short pants. Two major stalwarts were introduced, jeans and "T"-shirts, staples which are now worn around the world. American boys wore jeans in the 1950s, both for play and school. By the 1960s, however, shorts for casual wear and play began to increase in popularity. Suits were less commonly worn as casual styles became increasingly accepted as families moved to the suburbs. Suits change from large lapels in the 1940s to very narrow lapels opular in the 1960s.
