Margaret Mead In addition to age, gender is one of the universal dimensions on which status differences are based. Unlike sex, which is a biological concept, gender is a social construct specifying the socially and culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow. According to Gerda Lerner in The Creation of Patriarchy , gender is the "costume, a mask, a straitjacket in which men and women dance their unequal dance" (p.238). As Alan Wolfe observed in "The Gender Question" ( The New Republic , June 6:27-34), "of all the ways that one group has systematically mistreated another, none is more deeply rooted than the way men have subordinated women. All other discriminations pale by contrast." Lerner argues that the subordination of women preceded all other subordinations and that to rid ourselves of all of those other "isms"racism, classism, ageism, etc.it is sexism that must first be eradicated. Extractions: This concentration examines the Afroamerican culture in a number of ways, including diasporas, history, fine arts,the fight for racial equality, and other cultural aspects. Some of our courses are taught in conjunction with other departments, allowing for an even deeper examination of our culture. Topics include: Historical figures and issues that defined the black experience in the Americas and Africa. cultural expressions in literature ,dance and art in general. BLST 1150-3. REGIONAL CULTURES OF AFRICA. This course focuses on the nature of social and aesthetic experience in the cultures of West Africa, the region from which many African-Americans' ancestors were taken as slaves. Four West African cultures will be examined in great detail, with special attention given to questions about the nature of community (e.g., the relationship between the individual and the larger society), and to the ritual, symbolic and aesthetic ways in which a sense of community is created in each culture. The last section of the course compares various American senses of community with the West African one, arguing that the social experience of many African-Americans has closer affinities to that of West Africans than the more individualistic cultural orientation of Euro-American society. Extractions: Libya begins the construction of a large chemical weapons facility called Pharma 150 at Rabta, disguising it as a pharmaceuticals facility. Libya also begins construction of a second plant, called Rabta-II, 65 km south of Tripoli at Tarhuna, dedicated to producing chemical agents and ballistic missiles. The Libyans design the site at Tarhuna to withstand an air attack by building two 200-450 foot-long tunnels covered by 100 ft. sandstone shields and lined with reinforced concrete. These tunnels can resist the penetration capabilities of U.S. GBU-27B and GBU-28 penetration bombs. Libya also begins to build another chemical/biological plant at Sebha called Pharma-200. It is an underground site located on a military base that is almost identical to Rabta in design.

Extractions: Julian Samora, 1920-1996 by Richard Lamanna Julian Samora, a much loved and esteemed colleague and friend, died February 2, 1996 at his daughter's home in Albuquerque, N.M. He was 75 and had been suffering from a rare disorder of the nervous system. Julian was born in Pagosa Springs, Colorado in 1920. The harsh discrimination that he encountered through much of his early life undoubtedly played a crucial role in his determination to advance the cause of Hispanics and all minorities in American society. He received a bachelors degree from Adams State College in Colorado (1942) and a masters degree from Colorado State University in 1947. In 1953 he became the first Mexican American to earn a Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology (Washington University, St. Louis), with a dissertation on "Minority Leadership in a Bi-Cultural Community." Julian had a long and distinguished teaching career. He taught at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Michigan State University before coming to Notre Dame in 1959. In his 25 years at Notre Dame he served as Head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (1963-1966), founder and director of the Mexican-American Graduate Studies Program (1972-1985) and Director of Graduate Studies (1981-1984). He also served as visiting professor at the University of New Mexico, 1954; Michigan State University, 1955; Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia, 1963; University of California, Los Angeles, 1964; and the University of Texas, Austin, 1971.
