GRADES: 5-12 With the federal mandate to teach the Constitution over the next two weeks, I thought that this piece would go well, since it involved many of the same men, and the same time-period. S. Mandel Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. This course examines and applies subject-specific methods and materials, including the evaluation of student work, for teaching students of varying needs, interests and levels of academic preparation. Conceptualizing, organizing, presenting, and evaluating historical and social science content is particularly important. This course introduces the practical application of each social science in relation to specific curricular demands and also integrates instructional technology through internet sources and computer applications. Mastery of both theoretical concepts and their application in the classroom is essential. Course Requirements: 1. Qualitative discussion of assigned readings and completion of written assignments. 2. Midterm evaluation. 3. Five teaching presentations and related lesson plans. Four of the lessons will be presented in a public school setting. 4. Extractions: Martha Youngblood The United States, unlike any other nation, is a country of migratory people who arrived in mass over a relatively short period of time. The immigration of people from various lands has created a dynamic everchanging environment for young people to grow up in. Educating an American student for the good life mandates that these young minds be schooled in the laws, customs and ways of people worldwide. Students today live in a world which is so closely linked together by technological advances that the villages of Kenya are a split second from the living rooms of each student in New Haven. The impetus for developing a unit for teaching reading comprehension through Social Studies readings is the result of work with middle School Special Education students who were showing adequate progress in Reading, English and Math. The youths, however, lacked knowledge of the world around them. The students could relate a few facts about the United States and the state of Connecticut, but their need for a broader awareness of the world was obvious. These students also scored well on the word attack section of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test; however, they fell several years behind in reading comprehension and oral reading fluency. The students also did not perceive Social Studies as a real subject. Yet, in order to function in mainstream classes, the student is required to progress in all areas of the curriculum. Thus the marriage of Reading and Social Studies also served as the thrust to wean the Special Education student to the mainstream Social Studies classes.

Most who taught about impeachment stressed the process and legal concepts or made historical comparisons with previous presidential impeachments. Most teachers who chose not to teach about the impeachment did so because the topic was not related to the content emphasis of their course or because they believed the personal issues in the case were not appropriate for the age group they taught.
