Extractions: ATLANTA - The United Church of Christ's rule-making body voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve a resolution that endorses same-sex marriage, making it the largest Christian denomination to do so. The vote is not binding on individual churches, but could cause some churches to leave the fold. Roughly 80 percent of the members of the church's General Synod voted to approve the resolution. They debated for about an hour before voting. On Sunday, a committee of about 50 United Church of Christ representatives gave nearly unanimous approval to the resolution, recommending that the General Synod approve it. It was supported by the UCC's president, John H. Thomas. Traditionally strong in New England, the liberal denomination of 1.3 million members has long been supportive of gays and lesbians. Speaking literally, it's a 14th-century Greek-rooted word, and it refers to the government of a church. For us, it's the annual meeting of representatives from all over the denomination who gather to make decisions that affect church life. This group of representatives is called the General Synod of the RCA. The General Synod has authority in all matters that relate to denominational programs and policies. Its representatives are elders and ministers of Word and sacrament from all of the RCA's forty-six classes. ("Classes" is the plural of " classis General Synod delegates vote on recommendations that various RCA program agencies, commissions , committees, and task forces have sent to the synod. They also vote on overtures sent to synod by the classes and elect the vice president of synod, who typically is elected president the following year. General Synod meets in early June, at a different site each year.

Dr Samuel Kobia will deliver the keynote address at the annual conference of the International Council of Christians and Jews (ICCJ), in Chicago. Reflecting on the conference's theme "Healing the world - working together. Religion in global society," Kobia will stress the vital role of interreligious initiatives for promoting peace and justice. Rabbi David Rosen of the American Jewish Committee will respond to Kobia's address. Among other issues, Kobia will discuss the WCC central committee's recent call to member churches with investment funds to consider not participating economically in activities related to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories as a way of putting pressure on multinational corporations benefiting from it. Expressing its commitment in the area of interreligious relations and dialogue, the WCC organized a major international multi-faith conference last June in Geneva. The conference was attended by over 130 representatives of the world's main faith communities. ICCJ vice president, Rabbi Ehud Bandel of Jerusalem, was among the Jewish participants. The Germany-based ICCJ is an umbrella organization of 38 Jewish-Christian dialogue groups worldwide. Created in the immediate aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, it aims at promoting better understanding between Christians and Jews.
