Extractions: HISTORICAL WRITINGS IN THIS BIENNIUM show no significant deviations from the pattern first noted six years ago. The 20th century continues to attract more scholarly attention than does the 19th. Nearly two-thirds of the publications annotated below deal with the 20th century, and over half of them with the post-1930 years. There are fewer contributions from foreign authors. Several works have appeared containing selections from workers' newspapers that are rarely found in library collections. More Argentine scholarly journals have become available, and their articles, as well as those in other publications, reflect a wide range of interests and the increasing use of primary source materials located outside the city of Buenos Aires. The pre-1880 era is benefiting both from a reexamination of the evidence presented in older works, the application of new methodologies, and the greater utilization of provincial archives and collections. Extractions: Honduras New Evidence Opens Up History of Dirty War Despite "peace accords" and the formal ending of civil wars in Central America, the violent history of unspeakable crimes has not so simply come to a close. This is particularly the case in El Aguacate, Honduras, the focus of recent assertions that that the 3,000-acre base is home to torture chambers and clandestine graves. These allegations could lead to clues regarding the mysterious disappearances of 184 Honduran political prisoners, as well as Reverend James F. Carney, a popular community-based priest from the United States, and Green Beret David Baez Arturo Cruz. Currently, human rights advocates, hoping to uncover what really went on in the area, are pushing for an investigation of El Aguacate. As Leo Vallares, the National Commissioner for Human Rights, has learned from U.S. supplied de-classified documents, the CIA withheld information from Congress concerning human rights abuses inflicted on revolutionary leaders. Separately, the campesinos of this region have taken the army to court, exposing the ways in which they were pushed off their land by the military, and left with few other viable economic alternatives for obtaining new land when the base was built. Subjected to intimidation and abuse by Contra soldiers, and being dislocated from their land, these campesinos represent only a small number of innocent victims of war in the region.
