Extractions: Advanced Themes in Architecture and Urban Design was first offered in Spring 1996 as an elective graduate design studio as part of the curriculum of the Master of Architecture Program at the Middle East Technical University Department of Architecture. It aims at: integrating history and theory into the design process, experimenting with the devices or techniques utilized in architectural and urban design, while studying the traditions within which they were worked out. The theoretical orientation of the studio and the pedagogical approach we adopted cannot be adequately described without appealing to the concept of understanding in its Gadamerian sense. As Hans-Georg Gadamer elucidates it in Truth and Method , understanding refers to a unified process involving interpretation and application.
