Extractions: The Urban Forestry Program offers grants of over $1 million dollars a year to plant trees in urban communities throughout California. Three Urban Forestry Field Specialists provide expert urban forestry support to communities, non-profit groups and other municipal governments to create and maintain sustainable urban forest. The mission of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Urban Forestry Program is to develop a regional and statewide cooperative effort to advance the development of sustainable urban and community forests. Trees provide energy conservation, reduction of storm-water runoff, extend the life of surface streets, improve local air, soil and water quality, reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide, provide wildlife habitat and increase property values. They give us shady sidewalks and parks, and improve the quality of life in our urban environments. This mission is accomplished in cooperation with many groups including: California ReLeaf; California Urban Forest Council; USFS Center for Urban Forest Research; Urban Forestry Ecosystem Institute; and others representing power utilities, municipal arborist and professional organizations.

Extractions: It's that time of year when the Tree Foundation phones ring off the hook with this question.... "Who do you recommend I hire to prune my trees?" The Tree Foundation cannot make recommendations about who to hire. So we offer the following information so that you can be an informed consumer: General Information: Pruning trees every year is not necessary Pruning evergreens is not necessary (deadwood is an exception) Arborists are certified by the International Society of Arboriculture. No other certification has the standards that the ISA holds. Other memberships are bought, and not tested Different trees have different pruning standards. They should not all be pruned alike Do not allow topping under any circumstances Do not allow any blunt or major cuts Do not allow "lion tailing" or "feathering". (Stripping the branches and leaving "tufts" of leaves on the end, common in Chinese Elm work) Have no more than 25% of the tree removed at one time Allow no spikes on the ankles for climbing Gardeners are not pruners, shrubs are not trees

It is estimated that a tree with a 50-year life span provides nearly $60,000 of benefit over its lifetime. Other benefits are less easily measured, but not less valuable. An urban forest provides beauty that inspires us, recreation that refreshes us, and a contact with nature that lifts our spirits. The aesthetic and inspirational value of an urban forest is incalculable.
