Extractions: A breeze rustles through the leaves of newly planted saplings in a small grove surrounded by broken pavement and concrete buildings once littered with graffiti. In years to come, the trees will be a source of shade and beauty where children can play and families can gather beneath the green canopy deep within the inner city. The city landscape, once bustling with the activities of progress, commerce and convenient living, has taken a new course. A definite greening in the concrete jungle is taking hold. Tree planting projects, led by volunteers and dedicated professionals, are successfully bringing nature to the city and reuniting urban dwellers with the natural world around them. The urban forest is helping to cool and clean the air, providing shade and beauty for residents, improving property values and providing shelter for an array of wildlife. Unlike the wildland forest that stretches uninterrupted by human activity for miles on end, the urban forest thrives around crowded highways, business complexes and convenience stores from a single tree planted in the corner of a parking lot to the thick woods of a city park. The emerging trend toward the growth and care of urban forests is opening new doors of opportunity to fulfilling careers for city dwellers who love nature and want to play a role in preserving the delicate environment.

Extractions: Urban forestry is the conservation of trees along streets, in open green spaces and watersheds, in parks and in neighborhoods. There are few practices that contribute more to the quality of urban life than the sustainability of the natural resources on which we have built our communities. Trees are important to the economic and environmental health of our communities. Air quality, property value, community beautification, economic attractiveness, and general livability can all be derived from the planting and care of trees in our communities. Successful urban and community forestry programs are based on public awareness and support. Strong partnerships strengthen local urban forestry programs by advocating polititcal support, increasing management, leveraging private funding, obtaining media support and promoting public education outreach. Our responsibility is to educate communities about the importance of the urban forest environment and how to manage this valuable resource. You can help by joining the Arkansas Urban Forestry Council (AUFC). Our mission is to enhance quality of life by promoting the benefits of trees and development of sustainable community forests through education, outreach, and partnerships.
Extractions: Publications and Links What is Community Forestry? The community forest is the aggregate of all vegetation and green spaces within communities that provide benefits vital to enriching the quality of life. Properly cared for and well-managed community forests can provide benefits that far exceed their management costs. Community forests can also bring communities of people together and form connections between humans and the urban flora and fauna. Additionally, community forests are an integral part of large cities, rural areas, streets, backyards, parks, and open spaces. Community forests provide shade, beauty, and habitat for urban wildlife. Properly planted trees and other vegetation can reduce heating and cooling costs, intercept and store rainwater, improve air quality, and increase property values and local tax bases. Simply stated, community forestry is the combination of planning, establishment, management, and research of trees and associated plants (individually, in groups, or under forest conditions) within cities, suburbs, and towns. Community forestry addresses the interface between people, the built environment and trees through a dynamic interaction of forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, landscape architecture and urban planning. As cities continue to grow, increasing numbers of people will choose to live, work, and play in community forests, making the field of community forestry critical for healthy and sustainable living.

Stormwater Home Urban Forestry Description Urban forestry is the study of trees and forests in and around towns and cities. Since trees absorb water, patches of forest and the trees that line streets can help provide some of the storm water management required in an urban setting. Urban forests also help break up a landscape of impervious cover, provide small but essential green spaces, and link walkways and trails. Successful urban forestry requires a conservation plan for individual trees as well as forest areas larger than 10,000 feet . A local forest or tree ordinance is one technique for achieving conservation, and when specific measures to protect and manage these areas are included, urban forests and trees can also help reduce storm water management needs in urban areas. Applicability From a stream preservation perspective, it is ideal to retain as much contiguous forest as possible. At the same time, this may not be an option in many urban areas. If forested areas are fragmented, it is ideal to retain the closest fragments together. In rapidly urbanizing areas, where clearing and grading are important, tree preservation areas should be clearly marked. Delineating lines along a critical root zone (CRZ) rather than a straight line is essential to preserving trees and can help reduce homeowner complaints about tree root interference into sewer or septic lines.

Urban Forestry People tend to think of urban places as cities, while forestry evokes images One important program the Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Group http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/programs/urban/
Extractions: At first glance, the term Urban Forestry may seem like an oxymoron. People tend to think of urban places as cities, while forestry evokes images of parks or other large tracts of woodland. These are certainly contradictory images. So let's take a closer look. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an urban area is a place with a population of at least 2,500 people. This definition encompasses a wide range of communities, most of the cities and towns in Maryland. Forestry refers to individual parks, yards and street trees, as well as forest fragments such as wooded parkland, unimproved lots and naturally regenerating areas. Urban Forests are generally, though not exclusively, thought of as providing services; recreation, aesthetics, wildlife habitat, stormwater management, carbon storage and interception of airborne pollutants are some. This differs from the traditional view of forests as primarily providing goods like lumber, pulpwood or firewood. Emerald Ash Borer The emerald ash borer, an exotic insect pest affecting ash trees, was detected in Maryland in 2003. To control this threat to our ash trees, Maryland has developed a remediation plan that is a cooperative effort between the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). MDA is responsible for the detection and removal of the pest and the DNR Forest Service is responsible for remediation efforts. Seeing the Forest Through The Trees Forests and trees...natural resources that can be cared for thoughtfully to enhance our quality of life and can be used, protected, and replanted for the future.
