Jeremiah established the States first Truancy Court at Hope High School, in the City of Providence. During the first school year 2000/2001 we expanded the Truancy Court to Woonsocket, Central Falls, Pawtucket and Newport. This school year 2001/2002 we have established Truancy Courts in Cranston, Warwick, West Warwick, Bristol/Warren, Smithfield, Johnston, Foster/Glocester and added two additional middle schools in Providence. Once a truancy petition is filed in the Juvenile Clerks Office it is immediately docketed for the Truancy Court Calendar, and the petition is heard within two three weeks. Parents are summoned to appear in The Truancy Court located at the school. All truant children are arraigned separately and given the choice to either have their case set down for trial on the Family Court Delinquency Calendar or have their case monitored weekly by the Truancy Court. If a child/parent(s) choose monitoring over a trial, the child and parent(s) are seen weekly by the Truancy Court Magistrate. Attendance, academic performance and behavioral issues are reviewed each week. School personnel or community mental health organizations assess children who exhibit poor attendance or continue having behavioral problems.

RI Laws OVERVIEW COURT STAFF The Truancy Court Staff consists of: Magistrate Court Clerk Court Aide The duties of the Magistrate are to conduct initial arraignment explain court procedure and go over all options available to the child and parent(s). The Magistrate also conducts the weekly reviews once a child has entered the Truancy Court Program. The Magistrate imposes sanctions for non-compliance and offers praise and encouragement for progress. The Court Clerk is responsible for maintaining all the files during the court session and documenting all reports that are presented to the court. The Court Clerk is also responsible for giving the parent(s) the necessary documentation when necessary for their employer, excusing them from work for court sessions. The Court Aide is responsible for keeping the court running smoothly. The court aide works closely with school personnel to call the child out of class when their case is being heard by the court. The court aide is instrumental in maximizing the amount of cases that can be heard on any given day. He/she keeps the flow of cases moving so the childs time out of the classroom is minimized.
