Extractions: The population of Tobago consisted of small-game hunters, fishers, collectors of wild vegetable foods, fruits and edible shells. Sites can be found around Southwest Tobago, dating to about 4875 years Before Present , or in the third millennium BC (Boomert, p. 23) In Trinidad , sites can be found which date as early as 6,000 BC . The earliest archaeological finds for both Trinidad and Tobago are pre-pottery and pre-agriculture (Boomert, p. 23). The people of this period are referred to in the archaeological literature as " Pre-Ceramic ", given that they apparently did not make pottery. Most of the tools for this period consisted of stone flakes with a cutting edge, and water-rolled stones used for grinding. In addition, their tools may have consisted of basketry, and items made from wood, reeds, and various fibres, but these would not have survived the climate and hence there are no such artefacts. Given the proximity of settlements to water, archaeologists surmise that the canoe may have been in use (Harris). There appears to have been continuous settlement between 6500 and 4000 BC, and some evidence in rising waters in areas and a concomittant move inland.

Tourism and promiscuity are being blamed by health experts for the fast rising incidence of the dreaded Acquired Immmune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Tobago, an island that has begun to establish itself as an alternative to traditional tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Despite the high rate of HIV infection in its sister island of Trinidad, Tobago was long spared the scourge of AIDS. Whereas Tobago had only a few cases of infection prior to 1990, in Trinidad, AIDS was already the third ranking cause of death for men between the ages of 15 and 24 years and the second ranking cause of death for men in the age group 25 to 34 years. Now, at least one person in all but one of the villages in Tobago, has tested positive for the HIV virus. Between 1990 and 1996, 218 persons, most of them male, tested positive for the virus, with 91 deaths within this period. These statistics show only part of the picture. Not included in the official figures are those people who choose to be tested in private laboratories or in Trinidad.

The people I don't see on the road coming in, I see on the road going out," our driver said after honking and waving to just about every local resident we passed. His statement wasn't as much of an exaggeration as it sounded. There is one spiraling main road heading up the Atlantic side of Tobago and another winding along the Caribbean side, with a handful of roads twisting through the mountainous interior. In our case, we were headed back from a traditional dance performance in Patience Hill, one of Tobago's many villages hosting the annual Tobago Heritage Festival. The festival is designed to demonstrate the island's African roots and Caribbean culture, and also to help distinguish Tobago from its larger sister island of Trinidad, which lies just 21 miles away.

History Of Art The unique, multiethnic and multi-cultural mix of trinidad and tobago has In the past, trinidad and tobago s cultural and ethnic differences both http://latino.si.edu/rainbow/pages/History.html
Extractions: The unique, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural mix of Trinidad and Tobago has linked artistic expressions and iconography not only of Africa and Europe, but also of India, China, and the Middle East. In colonial times, imperial arrangements, both political and social, inhibited the growth of indigenous forms of artistic expression. Privileged West Indian sons were often educated in Europe, and European officials governed the islands. Paradoxically, it was this external control that facilitated the first formal emergence of a Trinidadian painter, Michel Jean Cazabon Cazabon was born in Trinidad, the son of Martiniquan free coloreds (a name once given to peoples of mixed race in the period after emancipation). He studied in Paris under Paul Delaroche and returned to Trinidad around 1850. Following closely the traditions of the French Landscape School, Cazabon depicted the islands and their people in watercolors and oils until his death in 1888. With the exception of the work of Theodora Walter (1869-1959), daughter of a Trinidadian mother and grand-daughter of English watercolorist Theodore Walter, there are few examples of Trinidadian art from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Walter's botanical paintings and simple landscapes are all that remain from that period.

Extractions: by Merle Hodge The very business of choosing between 'People' and 'Peoples' of Trinidad and Tobago for the title of this chapter is charged with emotive, cross-purpose argument. Even more than the term 'West Indian', the definition of a Trinidadian is far from cut and dried. Perhaps the epitome of a Trinidadian is the child in the third row class with a dark skin and crinkly plaits who looks at you out of decidedly Chinese eyes and announces herself as Jacqueline Maharaj. The strains which converge in her may be African, Indian, Chinese, French, Spanish. She speaks English will speak standard English on occasion but is most comfortable in a dialect of English which bears the imprint of French, Spanish, Hindi and African influences and is the common property of all her variegated classmates. And in this dialect children will formulate racial insults: Roti is an Indian food which today forms part of the normal diet of the entire population. It is eaten with great relish by everyone, as are the Indian barah, channa, polori and aloo-pie that all schoolchildren, of any racial description, spend their pennies on. Some of the most prosperous roti establishments are run by Trinidadians of African descent.

We therefore have many religious festivals and more recently some that celebrate the music and culture of the peoples of Trinidad and Tobago. Below are some of the festivals and links to some events happening annually in Trinidad and Tobago. Carnival :is one of the island's best known festivals, it is a last party before the Christian period of Lent. Phagwa :Festival celebrating the Hindu New Year, usually around full moon in March. Extractions: The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report, and government policy continued to contribute to the generally free practice of religion. The generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom issues with the Government in the context of its overall dialog and policy of promoting human rights. Section I. Religious Demography The country has a total area of 1,980 square miles, and its population is approximately 1.3 million. There is no dominant faith among the multiethnic population, which is 40 percent African and 40 percent East Indian; the remainder are of European, Syrian, Lebanese, and Chinese descent. According to the latest official statistics (1990), approximately 29 percent of the population are practicing or nominally Roman Catholic, 24 percent are Hindu, 6 percent are Muslim, and 31 percent are Protestant (including 11 percent Anglican, 7 percent Pentecostal, 4 percent Seventh-day Adventist, 3 percent Presbyterian/Congregational, and 3 percent Baptist). A small number of individuals follow traditional Caribbean religions with African roots. Sometimes these are practiced together with other faiths.
