Poole, Director Transportation Center Under the leadership of Robert Poole , Reason Public Policy Institute explores and promotes the role of market pricing and privatization in transportation infrastructure. These efforts have included publishing over 50 policy studies, speaking at numerous conferences (both academic and industry), testifying before congressional committees and other government bodies, writing op-ed articles, and becoming known to the media as a knowledgeable source of information on transportation issues. Some of the policy changes resulting from Reason Public Policy Institute 's work include California's landmark public-private tollway legislation; President Bush's Executive Order #12803 on Infrastructure Privatization, which removed the requirement that previous federal grant funds be repaid in the event a state or local government privatized an infrastructure facility on which federal funds had been spent; and the 1996 Airport Privatization Pilot Program, under which up to five U.S. airport can be sold or leased to the private sector. Reason Public Policy Institute also plays the lead role in the effort to modernize the U.S. air traffic control system by spinning it off to a stand-alone corporation funded directly by its users. Bob Poole covers three areas of transportation: surface transportation, aviation security, and airports/air traffic control. Extractions: Hurricane Katrina is an event where many of us must do our part, and our association is is doing its part as well. As you know, we are working with Congress and the Federal Transit Administration to make existing resources more flexible to use and more readily available. Visiting Mississippi: Notes from Gulfport We also are doing our part by offering immediate transit planning assistance to help affected communities respond to this crisis. Our assistance can help communities develop short-term temporary transit services during recovery phases, planning assistance to help reconstruct damaged transit services, or the development of additional services that respond to longer term needs of dislocated residents. We can help both in communities that have public transit services, and can help in those communities that had no transit before Katrina, but need it now. As part of our work, we will help identify appropriate capital and operating resources during the recovery period and beyond.
