Extractions: Transportation 1000 Friends believes that efficient transportation systems and thoughtful urban design are critical to developing growth patterns that promote environmental and economic sustainability. Florida's historical land-use pattern of low density suburban development has had profound impacts on our environment, increased the use of nonrenewable energy, devalued our inner cities and isolated our communities. When asked, Floridians are quick to say that they want to clearly define urban and rural areas, to protect the enormous economic and cultural resources associated with agricultural production and to reduce traffic congestion in their communities. Our mission is to help achieve these goals. Through a variety of efforts, 1000 Friends encourages innovative transportation and land-use solutions that reduce dependence on the automobile and help create more livable communities.
