Over all its networks, NBC is planning an astonishing 1,210 hours of coverage. Spread over seventeen days, that's an average of over 70 hours a day. It all makes one yearn for the halcyon days of the recent past when 180 hours of coverage seemed more than enough. The Games will be shown on seven different networks, plus on any other channels that NBC happens to buy between now and Friday. In addition to NBC, the list includes MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, and Telemundo. It seems an especially strange mishmash of stations. Will the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" stars provide commentary for Bravo? How will CNBC, a network that is all about money, cover what is supposed to be a celebration of amateur athletics? And will anyone even notice MSNBC's coverage? The seventh station will be a special high definition channel, which I can't wait to see. Once you watch badminton in high definition, you won't be able to watch it any other way. The good news is that of those 1,210 hours, at least 15 will be live. Actually, I'm lying. NBC plans plenty of live coverage, but it will mostly be on their cable channels. The more obscure the sport, the better the chance you will see it live. Most popular sports will be held back and shown on tape delay in prime time, so that we can all know the results ahead of time and not get too stressed over the outcomes.
