Olga Korbut, Olympic Gymnast Gymnastics has existed for more than 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just little more than 100 years ago. It was introduced to the U.S. and its school systems in the 1830's. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany won almost all the medals. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings and vault. Before this time, gymnastic competitions were generally held among local clubs. The first international gymnastics competition outside of the Olympics was held in 1903 in Antwerp, Belgium, where gymnasts from Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands competed in what is now considered the first World Championships. Fun Fact: Did you know that track and field events such as pole vault, broad jump, rope climb, 100 meter sprint, and shot put were considered gymnastics? Track and field did not fully disappear from the World Gymnastics Championships circuit until the 1954 competition. The first women's gymnastics instruction in the United States was given at Mount Holyoke College in 1862. In 1928, 32 years after gymnastics became an Olympic sport, women began to compete at the Olympic level. The U.S. women first competed in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.

The spartan accommodation houses one of the St. Petersburg Trampoline Federation's two co-functioning training halls for trampolining - a sport in which Russia displayed unparalleled prowess during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. And the coaches for St. Petersburg are conscious that they may be training the next round of Olympic medalists. Because of the heart-stopping performances of Krasnodar's Irina Karavayeva and Alexander Moskalenko, Russia leads the world in this little-known but fast-growing new Olympic sport. And with St. Petersburg's jumpers ranked second nationally, it would seem the bundled-up coaches have little to worry about in their hopes for future Olympic gold. However, with federal funding cuts and opportunities for local athletes and coaches looking bouncier abroad, coach Lyubov Bakina of the St. Petersburg Trampoline Federation is concerned for the future of her sport.
Extractions: Broadband Modem The tramopline is a mixture of somersaults and twists. The judges will be looking for a cleanly executed routine made up of at least 10 different skills. To help you understand the tramopline we'll guide you through some simple skills. We'll start with basic bouncing - straight jumps with tuck, pike and straddle. Then we'll follow these with some twists, seated jumps and even a forward or back somersault. Hopefully by the end you could be ready to tackle the schools routine. And then who knows....in a few years we may see you at the Olympics bouncing!

During World War II, trampolines were used to train pilots and navigators in fitness and orientation. After the war, astronauts trained on trampolines to develop body positioning for space flight missions. Trampolining became an international sport and was introduced into school physical education programs to combine fitness and fun. However, US participation declined as trampolines were withdrawn from schools due to injury law suits.

Extractions: Gymnastics has existed for more than 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800's, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various athletic and school clubs, as well as ethnic organizations, like the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the U.S. and its school systems in the 1830's by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, which would evolve into the International Gymnastics Federation, was formed in 1881 opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings and vault.

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Bouncers will be out in Sydney's Olympic Park on Friday but not to throw rowdy Australians out of pubs. These are competitors in the newest Olympic sport trampolining. The men and women who will be leaping up to 20-meters (65 feet) in the air prefer to be called bouncers to trampolinists. They hope their acrobatics will raise the profile of the sport, one of the least known in the Games. Trampolining was invented in the 1930s by Americans 'Leapin' Larry Griswold, a vaudeville acrobat, and George 'Hands' Nissen, a carnival performer who preferred to walk around on his hands. It was not recognized as an international sport until 1964. It staged its first world championships only in 1967. The sport was slow to take off because it was associated with children crashing to the ground in backyards across North America, breaking bones and spraining joints. But a competition manual put together in 1942 along with improved equipment has slowly increased its popularity, particularly in eastern European.
