Seattle Woman Magazine: Women In The Trades Graduates receive high school credit for courses in the building trades. In her current class of 40, divided into morning and afternoon, Johnson estimates http://www.seattlewomanmagazine.com/july05-1.htm
Extractions: From the scarce turnout at the fair, it would indeed seem that more outreach is needed. Only a few teenage girls showed up, among them Ashley Disney and Jordan Kehrer, who were on spring break. Ashley says she helped her carpenter dad install a bathroom, and is taking technical classes online, learning how to make a robot and a mouse for the computer. Jordan says she learned some building tips from her dad, an electrical engineer. Discrimination during hiring is also being explored as a possible barrier. Tradeswomen Now and Tomorrow (TNT) did a study of publicly funded construction sites in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Cleveland, Ohio; Oakland, California; and Portland, Maine, using independent monitors to oversee the hiring process. The group discovered that the use of monitors led to an increase in the number of women who signed on. Federal laws stipulate that publicly funded projects must attempt to employ women for at least 6.9 percent of hours worked. A Seattle Times poll sponsored by Elway Research taken a few years ago on I-200 (legislation that would have ended preferential hiring quotas in Washington) found that 80 percent of 400 people believe that women are discriminated against on construction sites.

Extractions: To make the words of all 2004 (democratic) presidential candidates searchable for researchers and people who are other-abled. Main Washington, DC Thank you Ed Sullivan for having me here today and for all you've done for the labor movement. It's been almost 40 years since Ed joined his union in a small town called Boston. He's a hometown guy and he's an elevator construction guy who has gone all the way to the top. You and I have many things in common. We love our country. We know it needs a new direction. And we believe that our rights as Americans include the right to organize. But you and I have something else in common too. The Republican leadership has attacked our freedom to speak and even our very patriotism. Recently Tom Delay tried to make a political issue of my call for new leadership. Well, I refuse to have my patriotism questioned by him or anyone else. I fought for and bled for and earned the right to express my views in this country. If they want to pick a fight, they've picked a fight with the wrong guy. And they clearly picked the wrong fight when they questioned your patriotism and valor. Three months ago, Tom Delay said organized labor "exploited World War II." And he said that now you're a quote "clear and present danger to the security of the United States at home and the safety of our Armed Forces oversees."

Extractions: How about money, career opportunities, and a growing respect fro the trades. These are just three of the benefits that come to mind when discussing skilled trades. The old-fashioned views that skilled trades involve hard physical labour, are dirty, and provide fewer opportunities than other careers, have all been thrown out the window. Today it is a common understanding that careers in skilled trades involve specific aptitudes and abilities that not just anyone possesses, provide creative and intellectual challenges, and build complex skills that help trades people work with new technology. The industrial nature, expertise, workmanship, and precision required and learned in the skilled trades makes it a highly sought after profession. Launch Your Career A great place to start training to become a skilled tradesperson is Medicine Hat College, a comprehensive community college serving southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. The college has built an outstanding network of partner institutions and has worked hard to develop a full range of diploma and certificate programs that have been designed to ensure the skills provided match those required in the workplace, and lead to immediate employment opportunities. Small classes, taught by a highly qualified faculty, and a personal, friendly environment makes the college a perfect institution for students with individual career goals.

Extractions: Building Construction Site Type of Activities: This project requires a vast amount of hands-on experimentation, data analysis, cooperative/interdisciplinary learning, community involvement, and job shadowing/career awareness as students examine an area of land and assess its suitability for construction purposes. Target Audience: I utilize this project in biology classes after the students have completed a unit of study on ecosystems. This project is designed to apply all of the knowledge and skills that the students have mastered. This project would also be very well suited for environmental studies. Background Information This is the final project after an extensive study of ecosystems. I spend nearly nine weeks on ecosystems. I cover plants and animals, climatology, types of ecosystems, components of ecosystems, cycles in ecosystems, and changes in ecosystems. Only after the students have completed these tasks are they able to carry out this project. The students will be assigned an area of land. This land must be closely examined and studied to assess its suitability for construction purposes. I have the luxury of team teaching this activity with our building trades instructor. We combine our classes for the duration of the project. I teach the biological aspects of the project while he focuses on the construction and business side of the project. We select an actual future construction site. The stages of the project are listed below.

Letters To The Editor: 8/9/05 The Pittsburgh building and Construction trades Council, whose associate To that end, the building trades Council also is working with the school http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05221/550661.stm
Extractions: The Pittsburgh Building and Construction Trades Council, whose associate organizations represent thousands of local construction-trades workers, takes great exception to the manner in which opponents have turned the Pittsburgh school district's consideration of a project labor agreement on its coming construction projects into a racial issue (" Residents Say Schools' Labor Proposal Discriminates Against Minority Firms ," July 19). The city's school board is likely to decide Aug. 24 (after the issue was tabled July 27) on a labor agreement between the trades and the district. The Building Trades Council strongly believes the most important issue when it comes to school construction should be the quality of the contractors building the schools. Having only qualified local contractors working on our schools for which a project labor agreement provides helps to ensure that new buildings are safe and that the work is the most cost-effective possible, minimizing added costs and delays. However, as the Post-Gazette has unfairly highlighted, opponents of the agreement decry a project labor agreement because, they say, it will not permit some minority contractors to be selected for the work as they cannot compete with the firms (minority or otherwise) that are actually qualified to do school construction.
