Extractions: Eye Safety Encourage Your Family and Construction Worker to Use Eye Protection at Home and at Work. We Only Get One Set of Eyes! Imagine waking up in the morning and not being able to see your loved ones! Eye injuries can be prevented if good safety practices are followed, and appropriate eye protection worn. In construction more than 10,000 eye injuries occur each year that force workers to miss work! Construction has the highest rate of eye injuries when compared to other lines of work. At Home and At Work activities can put your eyes at risk in less than a blink of an eye! From flumes and splashes from household cleaners, to dust and flying debris from lawn tools, to nails, metal, splinters, and cut wire ends flying in the air. Sawing, grinding and chipping all make irritating dust. As well as moving machinery and power tool use. Serious injury and blindness can occur not only to yourself, but to others nearby. Children should be taught to protect their eyes from an early age. Commit this month to the use of Safety Eyewear to avoid risky eye injuries.

Extractions: Working with the Building Trades When all is said and done, a thin-shell is still just a shell. It doesn't have electricity, or plumbing, or air conditioning. And yet to be complete, the building needs all those things. So it's imperative that the designers and builders know how to communicate and work with other trades to teach them how to apply their trade in a structure they might not have seen before. The great news is that there are very few changes from normal. Electrical. One of the first trades into the building will be the electrician, because it takes power to operate inflators, foam equipment, and many hand tools. They are also there early to install conduit in the shell for eventually running wiring. Most building codes require receptacles every 12', plus ceiling fans and hanging lights need boxes installed in the shell. This is handled by carefully measuring the location of each box, and running conduit to it, with turn-outs at the nearest convenient interior wall. The conduit should ideally be installed before the rebar, to reduce the thickness of concrete needed for full coverage. And boxes need to be protected and cleaned during the shotcrete process. Aside from that, the rest of the electrical is pretty typical. Plumbing.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime. For decades, skilled journeyworkers have been passing down their knowledge about everything from roofing and electrical work to painting and carpentry to eager apprentices ready to learn. New York state recognized the important practice in 2001 when legislators passed a law allowing school boards and local governments to require bidders on construction projects to have a state-approved apprenticeship program. "Apprenticeship programs provide opportunities for our young men and women to earn a good living while they are employing their skills," said Jeff Stark, an organizer with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades' District Council 9 in Albany. IUPAT has run its training program for more than 20 years. The law, Stark said, provides another tool for time-pressed school board members to use when searching for the lowest responsible bidder. "Why would they want to trust those projects to contractors who are not responsible enough to provide training for their workers?"
