X-Files: Fight the Future A German adventurer heads east and ends up as mentor of the young Dalai Lama. This sentence would probably stop a lot of people from going to the trouble of watching this movie, I know...I was one of those people. I procrastinated for a few weeks before renting a copy of Seven Years In Tibet. I had heard some of the hype, something which I try to turn a blind eye to, as more often than not I find that I am left bitterly disappointed. This movie proved me wrong. Brad Pitt ranks highly in my category of favourite actors so for that reason alone I finally took out the video and watched it with my husband. In my books "Pitt" has never made a bad movie and his performance in Seven Years in Tibet was outstanding. Of course the script in itself was brilliant, as were the other actors and the scenery can only be described as breathtaking. Pitt plays the role of Heinrich Harrer, a mountain-climber who, at the beginning of the movie leaves you feeling like you want to give him a good thrashing. By the end of the movie however, not only do you not want it all to end but you are left with the feeling that you want to find out more about this extraordinary man and the Dalai Lama whom he befriends.

Extractions: At present entry into Tibet is controlled by the 'PSB' public security bureau that requires travelers to possess a permit of travel. more information: Areas in China/Tibet open to foreign travellers Getting a permit means you must be in a group so if you want to travel independantly from China to Tibet it has to be outside the law! If you have a bit of an adventurous spirit this is the way to go!!! The risk if you're caught is a fine of up to 2500 Yuan, that's the most I've heard of. Three hundred dollars for the adventure of your life is pretty cheap if you ask me!
John Vincent Bellezza: New Archaeological Discoveries In Tibet Article in Asian Arts by John Vincent Bellezza concerning a series of preBuddhist archaeological sites in the western tibet province of Ngari. http://www.asianart.com/articles/bellezza/index.html
Extractions: Black Rock In August and September of 1998 I discovered a series of pre-Buddhist archaeological sites in the western Tibet province of Ngari (mNga ris) . Located in close proximity to what had been important prehistoric sources of fresh water, these ancient sites include burial mounds, villages and ceremonial structures. Situated at 4500 meters in the Changthang (Byang thang), the vast northern plains of Tibet, these finds significantly add to our knowledge of Tibet before the spread of Buddhism in the 7 th to 11 th centuries. Until I began systematic exploration of Changthang, more than ten years ago, little was known about the character of its ancient civilization. In that time, I have charted dozens of sites spread over 400, 000 square kilometers, documenting the existence of the legendary Zhang zhung kingdom. Zhang zhung, according to classical Tibetan texts, was a powerful nation which dominated the Tibetan plateau before being conquered by the central Tibetan Pugyal (sPu rgyal) dynasty in the 7 th or 8 th century . Textual sources aside, there was little evidence for Zhang zhung before I began my work.
