Tired? Depressed? Check Your Thyroid A blood test confirmed Amato was hypothyroid her thyroid gland was When yourthyroid becomes underactive or overactive, here s what to watch for - and http://www.mentalhealth.com/mag1/p51-thyr.html
Extractions: Condensed from American Health (May '94) Julie Amato of Simsbury, Conn., had been a high-energy person. "I ran five to seven miles a day and was always the one to say 'Go, go, go.'" But things changed after the birth of her first child, and Amato, 35, felt "horrible. My hands and feet were always cold. My periods were much heavier, and I had so little energy that just getting up the stairs was a major effort. I thought I was dying." Finally she saw a doctor "who took one look at me and said, 'It's your thyroid.'" A blood test confirmed Amato was hypothyroid - her thyroid gland was underactive, producing too little thyroid hormone. With daily treatment her energy level has gradually increased." Ann Maltz, 37, of Houston was also a new mother. "I was jittery, my hair was falling out, I wasn't sleeping and my heart seemed to be racing," she remembers. Like Amato - and many other women - Maltz blamed the stress of motherhood. One day, while she was going downstairs, her legs slid out from under her. She was too weak to stand. From the swollen appearance of her neck, Maltz's physician suspected a thyroid problem. Tests confirmed it: Her thyroid was on fast-forward, producing too much hormone. Maltz now feels fine after treatment for hyperthyroidism.

Thyrogen.com - Testing Treatment For Thyroid Cancer And Hypothyroidism Official pharmaceutical website (thyrotropin alfa for injection) is used in combination with other tests to detect recurring or leftover thyroid cancer cells in patients with a history of certain types of thyroid cancer. http://www.thyrogen.com
Extractions: Genzyme Corporate Research Search Genzyme Websites Welcome to Thyrogen.com Thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. It does, however, mean a lifetime of careful monitoring and testing. This often meant that, at least once a year, thyroid cancer patients would have to go off their thyroid hormones to prepare for the necessary tests. For weeks and often a few months, patients would experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, which may cause great discomfort and may even disrupt home life and work. Some patients may now have an alternative. Using Thyrogen (thyrotropin alfa for injection) in combination with common imaging and laboratory tests, provides patients with an alternative to thyroid hormone withdrawal and the difficulties it can cause while giving doctors an effective follow-up tool in the management of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. For more details, please read the full product information. Learn about thyroid cancer and the role that Thyrogen can play in your testing, whether you've just been diagnosed or you're a survivor.

As an adjunct to other diagnostic procedures, testing with Thyrel TRH (protirelin) may yield useful information in patients with pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction. Thyrel TRH is indicated as an adjunct to evaluate the effectiveness of thyrotropin suppression with a particular dose of T4 in patients with nodular or diffuse goiter. A normal TSH baseline value and a minimal difference between the 30 minute and baseline response to Thyrel TRH injection would indicate adequate suppression of the pituitary secretion of TSH. Thyrel TRH may be used, adjunctively, for adjustment of thyroid hormone dosage given to patients with primary hypothyroidism. The Eyes And The Thyroid Gland Information on the management of Graves' ophthalmopathy. From the University of Ottawa Eye Institute. http://www.eyeinstitute.net/subfiles/comocprb/graves.htm
Extractions: The eye and the thyroid gland HISTORICAL BACKGROUND For more than 150 years, conditions known as Graves Disease and chronic autoimmune thyroditits have been associated eye problems (ophthalmopathy). In 1825, Caleb Parry described a condition of goitre and eye protrusion. In 1835, Robert Graves wrote about cases of thyroid disease and proptosis (protrusion) of the eye, and this form of hyper-thyroidism was named after him. In 1840, Carl von Basedow noted swelling of tissues around the eye in patients with hyperthyroidism. Although considerable research is being done, it is not yet known why the eye is involved in thyroid conditions. PATHOGENESIS (CAUSE) Some ophthalmologists think eye changes result from either an autoimmune abnormality or a regulatory cell disorder that allows some antibodies to attack the ocular muscles, which leads to inflammation and other signs of discomfort.

Extractions: The thyroid, like other body organs, goes through a rapid development stage as we grow from infancy to adulthood. The thyroid cells grow and produce their hormones in a tightly controlled manner. In the adult, thyroid cells only divide to replace those lost through old age or injury. Thyroid cancer starts In just one cell. Something goes awry in the internal workings of this cell; in it's "genes". The genes contain the genetic information that controls the cell; they may be influenced by outside hormones. With specific types of gene damage, the cell starts dividing out of control, forming a tumor. Each year in the U.S.A. there are 17,500 new cases of thyroid cancer causing 2,300 deaths. Thyroid cancer accounts for just 1.5% of new cancers in the U.S.A. Women are affected more than men three cases to two. The risk increases with age, the average patient is 50 years old. Thyroid cancer is rare in people younger than 30. Thyroid cancer is more common in people of Asian extraction, and the number of cases has Increased worldwide over the past decade. Goiter simply means an enlarged thyroid gland. It can be either generally big or just have separate areas of enlargement (nodules). It the pituitary gland in the brain makes too much TSH, then the thyroid will enlarge. Goiters can be present at birth or develop later in life. Iodine is necessary for the the thyroid to make it's hormones and with iodine insuff iciencency, a goiter will develop as the brain tries to stimulate the thyroid to make it's crucial hormones. In general, having a goiter increases the risk of thyroid cancer. In animals, thyroid cancer has been produced by severe iodine restriction, giving lots of TSH, and "goiterogen" foods (such as cabbage and rapeseed oil) that stimulate goiter.

But for years, a growing number of them have been exploring the aid nicotine may offer people with dementia, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and more. "Yesterday's poison can be today's therapy," said Dr. Jerry J. Buccafusco, a pharmacologist and researcher at the Medical College of Georgia. Pharmaceutical researchers are racing to synthesize drugs that could offer the benefits of nicotine without its negative side effects, such as addiction and narrowed blood vessels.

Extractions: The thyroid gland is located in the neck. It manufactures two thyroid hormones that are essential for metabolism and growth. The thyroid takes iodine from the food we eat and uses it to make thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormones are in short supply, a person feels sluggish, has a slow heartbeat, and can even feel depressed. Doctors call this condition hypothyroidism. If a newborn has hypothyroidism, the baby can develop a condition called cretinism. The baby may have slowed development and poor intelligence unless the condition is corrected.
