Extractions: Thematic teaching is interdisciplinary teaching that organizes instruction around, and delivers curriculum through, the exploration of major issues. For example, student and teacher interest in an upcoming election provide a theme within which students can explore social sciences and mathematics. Mathematically, the theme of a presidential election can motivate studies of sampling, polling, and the centuries-old issues of censuses and the apportioning of votes in the Electoral College. The Great Chile Challenge is a thematic unit which demonstrates how math, science, social studies, language arts, and fine arts learning can be enhanced by providing a culturally relevant topic.

Thematic Instruction organizes a curriculum around "themes" that connect standards-based materials to authentic learning contexts. A theme may be something as specific as "Golf" or as general as "Wealth." It may be as obvious as "Law" or as ambiguous as "What is Justice?" Instruction is focused on and explicitly connected to the theme. A thematic unit is a directed effort, not a grab bag of loosely connected concepts. How is Thematic Instruction utilized? Themes may be developed for individual classrooms in specific domains, such as a "Golf" themed unit in a foreign language class, or they may be integrated across domains, such as an interdisciplinary unit on "Wealth" that is explored across foreign language, English, and social studies. The inherent flexibility of a thematic unit allows it to be modified to support any instruction across multiple domains. Who decides what themes are appropriate?
Cthem Project CHILD provides the ideal vehicle for thematic teaching while at the same The CHILD Learning Activities Guides offer six topical units organized http://www.ifsi.org/cthem.htm
Extractions: The Project CHILD Link While the whole language movement versus phonics debate continues, growing consensus among leading experts suggest that a "combination of the two approaches may be the most effective way to teach...(Diegmueller, 1996)." Finally the experts have discovered what many teachers already know. Teach specific content, connecting skills with a more thoughtful, process approach. Project CHILD teachers can intensify "skill-based" curriculum by unifying the curriculum around a common theme. Project CHILD provides the ideal vehicle for thematic teaching while at the same time providing the underlying curricular framework for covering the basic foundational skills necessary for future success in the upper grades. Project CHILD brings balance to the instructional process through didactic as well as constructivist approaches. Here's how it works. The CHILD Learning Activities Guides offer six topical units organized around reading/writing genres. Each unit suggests the foundational skills in reading, language arts, and mathematics which support the unit topic. Project CHILD teachers use this framework as a vehicle for organizing their own thematic units. Here are some examples: Unit One (Getting to Know You/Autobiography): Friends, Families, Cultures, My Body-Myself, Feelings, Communities, Healthy Choices, Leadership, Courage, Heroes, School Family, etc.

Extractions: in the Home and in School Students in bilingual and ESL classrooms manipulate more than one language and are influenced by more than one culture. Their experiences with these languages and cultures influence their learning. The more we understand the personal, socio-cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of bilingual students, the better equipped we will be to provide these students with an effective learning environment. This environment should be one that supports learning in a second language and culture, while fostering a positive attitude and respect for the other language and culture. The responsibility for English language learning, academic progress, and integration of bilingual and ESL learners into the school community should be assumed by all personnel at the school, not just by the bilingual and ESL staff. School administrators should make certain that bilingual students have opportunities to integrate both socially and academically with monolingual English speakers ( Brisk, 1998

Elementary Science Unit Planning Once a coordinated yearly plan for the entire teaching and support staff in the thematic units The objectives from this unit may be incorporated into a http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/elemsci/unplesc.html
Extractions: There are a variety of ways to go about planning a unit. No one method of planning is inherently "better" than any other. Regardless of the planning methods used, all unit plans have some important things in common. Before unit planning can begin, teachers should develop a comprehensive year plan, not just for science, but to include their entire teaching load. In this year plan, the Core Units that need to be developed should be considered first. Timelines and organizational strategies for Core Units should be developed. Patterns may exist which allow teachers to group Core Units together. This is particularly important when integration between subjects takes place. Once the Core Units are planned, any Optional Units or thematic units that will be covered should be considered. Alternately, thematic units could be planned first. Then the objectives from the Core and Optional Science Units, as well as objectives from other subject areas, can be integrated. Part of the process of developing a comprehensive year plan should be to coordinate activities with other teachers in the school. This coordination should occur between grades, and among teachers at the same grade levels. The purpose of this coordination is to search for patterns that emerge with other teachers' planning strategies, striving to achieve a coordinated learning environment in the school based on common goals and common expectations. This year plan could be a major focus of teacher inservice activity near the beginning of the school year.
Cross-Curricular Thematic Reading Instruction - Why This Works. It takes time to plan thematic units, and the units themselves generally lastseveral In particular, thematic teaching challenges both over reliance on http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Literacy/Cross_Curricular_Thematic.asp
Extractions: The Integration of Literacy, Music, and Technology into the classroom An example of building a thematic unit is much like being a collector. You and the children will be gathering the indigenous playground poetry your class uses everyday. Then you'll learn about it so you can share these sources with others interested in your work/play. You can plan this all by yourself, get the other teachers in the school involved - make it interdisciplinary, and cross curricular, involve students naturally. Children's indigenous playground poetry has enormous value and credibility as the basis for the language arts curriculum that sets the planning process in motion. This is the literature foundation so fundamental to the success of thematic teaching and your enthusiasm.
