Extractions: Our school traces its beginnings to Madison Academy, founded by Mississippians John H. and Rivers O. Allen in Madisonville, Texas in 1886. Founded as an elementary and secondary school for boys and girls, it became Madison College in 1895 and then Allen in 1896. Today, the public education system in Madisonville traces its beginnings to Allen. The Allen brothers decided to move their school to Bryan because of the town's growing rail connections, its central location between Houston, Waco, Dallas, and Austin, and because they envisioned their school becoming a preparatory school for the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College. Several prominent citizens of Bryan encouraged the move and helped establish Allen as a boarding school for boys in 1899. Allen quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding college preparatory school with highly respected, feared, and victorious athletic teams. In 1917, thirty years after it's founding and with the coming of World War I, Allen once again adapted to the needs of the times; military training was added to the academy's academic programs. Over more than sixty years, Allen earned a reputation unmatched by any other military school in Texas and unbeaten by any military preparatory school in the nation. Beginning in 1922 and continuing in an unbroken record until 1983, Allen and its Corps of Cadets earned the United States Army's highest rating as an Honor Military School with Distinction. Educated to be citizens first and soldiers when needed, Allen's cadets served and died in every period military conflict and theater of operation.

In 1819, the mother-house was definitely located at Rappoltsweiler, and in 1869 the institute received papal confirmation. The congregation has (1908) 1800 members, over 1200 of them teachers in 357 primary schools of Alsace. The sisters have over 44,000 children under instruction; they conduct boarding and day schools, orphan asylums, reformatories, a housekeeping school, a high school for girls, and a deaf and dumb institution. Attached to the novitiate are a teacher's seminary and practice school. Archbishop and on his return went to St. Mauritz, where, with the help of two other priests, he founded an orphan asylum. He selected several teachers whom he sent to the Sisters of Divine Providence at Rappoltsweiler to be trained in the religious life. The rule followed there was adopted with a few alterations by the new community and received episcopal approbation.
