Extractions: The people of Athens greeted the Games with great enthusiasm. There is no event that the Greek hosts wanted to win more than the marathon race, because of its historical significance. Spiridon Louis, a Greek shepherd set off from the city of Marathon (marathon was run from Marathon to Athens over the course covered by Greek hero Pheidippides in 490 B.C. after the battle with the Persians) and took the lead four kilometres from the finish line and, to the great joy of the 100,000 spectators, won the race by more than seven minutes. Alfréd Hajos (HUN-swimming) won the 100m and the 1,200m events. For the longer race, the swimmers were transported by boat and left to swim back to shore alone. According to Hajos, "I must say that I shivered at the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp from the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win". The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Exposition Universelle Internationale - the Paris World's Fair. The exposition organizers spread the events over five months and de-emphasized their Olympic status to such an extent that many athletes died without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.

Molik overcame her nerves after allowing fourth seed Myskina to win three games in a row to lead the second set 3-2. "I was obviously pretty emotional and very, very nervous," the 23-year-old said. "Today was pretty special because if I'd come out the loser I wouldn't have anything to remember the Olympics by. It was the last bite of the cherry." The 23rd-ranked Molik has now defeated four of the world's top 15 players in the last three weeks. She beat world number two Amelie Mauresmo in San Diego before losing to the Frenchwoman in yesterday's semi-finals, opened her Olympic campaign with victory over sixth-ranked Elena Dementieva of Russia, the French Open finalist, and in the quarter-finals beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama, currently the world number 13. Myskina was still feeling the effects of her three hour semi-final, when she threw away her chance of reaching the gold medal match by allowing Belgian world number one Justin Henin-Hardenne to claw her way back from 1-5 in the final set for a dramatic win.

She defeated Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Dementieva is a fast-rising Russian star in women's tennis, a tall, powerful, and quick 18-year-old, but she was completely overpowered by Williams. Both Williams and Dementieva had been tested in their semifinals. Venus got by Monica Seles 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Elena worked a little harder to advance against Australian Jelena Dokic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Venus followed up by winning the gold medal in doubles with her sister Serena. Venus and Serena simply crushed the Dutch team, Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans, 6-1, 6-1. The match took just 50 minutes. Venus became only the second woman in Olympic history to win both the singles and the doubles gold. Helen Wills was the first, in 1924. The bronze singles medal went to Seles, who defeated Dokic 6-1, 6-4. Belgians Els Callens and Dominique Van Roost took the doubles bronze over Olga Barabanshchikova and Natasha Zvereva of Belarus 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Gustavo Kuerten, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, and the Williams sisters look forward to it enthusiastically, but opting to skip this Olympics are many of tennis's other big stars, including Pete Sampras, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Mary Pierce, and rising star Jan-Michael Gambill. Defending gold medalist Andre Agassi had been eager to play, but has withdrawn due to concurrent illness of his sister and mother. Other players withdrawing late, many of them citing injuries, include Nicolas Lapentti, Andrei Medvedev, Marc Rosset, Sebastien Grosjean, Anke Huber, Patty Schnyder, Nathalie Tauziat, and Sandrine Testud. The big names who chose early to skip the Sydney Olympics say it's too close to the US Open and too far away from home. The tennis event runs Sept. 19-28, starting only nine days after the US Open, and Australia is a long enough trip that for most of Australian Open history, it was the only Grand Slam that would often be skipped by a significant number of top pros.
