Im just a down-home guy who happened to get lucky. Thats how former Chicago Police Superintendent Terry Hillard described himself during the Center for Public Safetys summer Executive Management Program. To many of the graduates, Hillard was the icing on the cake on the last day of the three week program. Soft spoken and genuine, Hillard walked them through his career path step by step, stopping along the way to remind them of their mission. The 31 students came from Illinois, New York, Florida, and Louisiana. Several students paid their own tuition and used vacation time to take this opportunity for professional development. For the first fourteen days the students received useful advice on managing the political environment. They compared notes with seasoned experts who served as instructors and with each other on issues such as media relations, critical incidents, internal affairs, labor relations, and terrorism. Then on day fifteen Hillard wrapped it all up with extraordinary candor and humility. (
Extractions: Ethics in Medical Education Below is a list of U.S. medical schools that still use live animals to teach basic concepts in human physiology, pharmacology, and/or surgery. Two-thirds of all U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford and Yale, have eliminated these old-fashioned laboratories in favor of modern, cost-effective and humane alternatives. Please write to your local universities and alma mater to express your concerns about these crude exercises. Please note that this list includes only schools that use live animal laboratories to train medical students, and does not refer to basic research that may be conducted at medical schools and universities.
