Extractions: For centuries Europe has been the heart of the world. European empires spanned the globe and transformed lives near and far. How and why was this possible? Globally, Europe's relative location at the heart of the land hemisphere is one of maximum efficiency for contact with the rest of the world. No where in Europe is more than three hundred miles from the sea. No place in Europe is very far from any other place on the continent. These geographic advantages enabled Europe to develop, as no other area has been able to do. Western Europe is composed of eighteen countries. These include the large countries of Germany and France ; the low countries of Belgium , the Netherlands , and Luxembourg ; the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland ; the British Isles which include Ireland and the United Kingdom ; Norden or Northern Europe which is comprised of Denmark Finland Norway Sweden , and Iceland , and Mediterranean Europe which consists of Greece Italy Portugal , and Spain . This area is a mosaic of landforms, climates, cultures, traditions, and history. From the rugged peaks of the Scandinavian peninsula to the flat vineyards of Spain, Western Europe is a jigsaw puzzle of many, varied pieces. In order to understand the complexity of this region, we will examine each country, in depth.
Geography Of The Sequatchie Valley A Research Project for geography 201, Physical geography II The Sequatchie Valley in southeastern tennessee (and Browns Valley in northeastern Alabama) http://www.ilstu.edu/~sgkuntz/research/IntroSequatchie.html
Extractions: Farm Land in Sequatchie Valley Photos courtesy Southeast Tennessee Tourism The Sequatchie Valley in southeastern Tennessee (and Browns Valley in northeastern Alabama) is one of the most recognizable non-coastal landforms in the eastern United States. The valley looks almost like a knife incision when viewed on a topographic map. If you visit, you'll notice that the valley is very striking in appearance, with quite steep escarpments leading to a fairly narrow (generally less than five miles across) and flat valley floor. This illustration created by Scott Kuntzelman from an original image by David Hastings of the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center using GLOBE (Global Land One-kilometer Base Elevation) data. The original image was downloaded from the NGDC FTP site I've included an illustration to put the area in geographic and spatial perspective.
Extractions: Tennessee A State Unit Study This mini unit on TENNESSEE uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study TENNESSEE. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual childs needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about TENNESSEE and enjoyable for all who are participating. Tennessees State Flag The three stars on the flag represent the three different land forms in Tennessee. Mountains in the east, highlands in the middle and lowlands in the west. On the flag these regions are bound together in an unbroken circle. The field is crimson with a blue background for the stars. The final blue strip relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag from showing too much crimson when it is limp. Create a State Infodesk: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. It will record all known Australian names, documenting their pronunciation, generic class, status (gazetted, obsolete, non-gazetted, sensitive, disputed etc.), origin, meaning, history, cultural significance (of both name and site), and map reference and location. Traditional city directories have been converted from paper resources to full-text searchable digital documents. As of August 2004, historic images of Boston from both The Bostonian Society (about 3000 images) and Tufts University (400 images) were scanned for use with the Boston Streets project. Overview maps and atlases of Boston ranging from 1844 to 1950 make up the bulk of the geographic resources included in the project. Orthographic images of modern day boston, and vector data from the boston redevelopment authority and MassGIS are use to ground the Boston in its modern context. The layering of historic maps and datasets of address points collected from those maps, show visually the changes in Boston's physical landscape as time progresses." These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas -see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796.
