Children and youth are often asked what they would like to be when they grow up. Neither the question nor the answers usually connect to the steps necessary to make the career aims a reality. Unlike the magical thinking of a child, careers usually do not just happen. One important part of achieving a career goal is being academically prepared for the career in which we are interested. Relating the information that we study in classes to careers can help us be academically prepared and make school more fun. These connections can help us understand the need for advanced education, whether it's a bachelor's degree from college, an associate's degree from a technical school, industry certification, or a doctorate from a graduate school.
