Extractions: Alumni News Fall 2001 Volume 122 No. 01 Russell Tranbarger (Ex '48) attended the academy's elementary division in the 1940's when his father and mother, Rev. William David Tranbarger and Nova Smith Tranbarger, were both enrolled in the high school division. Russell and his sister, Judy Tranbarger Bible, who was too young to attend the academy when the family lived in the front apartment of the old administration building, visited the campus this past summer. Russell Tranbarger and Judy Tranbarger Bible stand in front of a picture of their father and mother, who both graduated from the academy in the Class of 1948. The Tranbarger boys apparently had some time on their hands occasionally when they were young students here. Russell recalls the day the smell of peanut butter got the best of them and they sneaked into the school store, took a supply of peanut butter and crackers (which were manufactured on campus under the supervision of Mrs. William Hall), and took their treasure to the old swimming pool to eat. Unfortunately for them, Mr. York Stewart was watching from his dorm window. Mr. Stewart gave them a whipping, then summoned their mother, who whipped them again. When their father got home they got their third whipping in one day.
Extractions: Alumni in Georgia Live Lives of Meaning and Impact; Give Credit to Academy Relationships and Atmosphere By Walter Grubb, President Fall 2001 Volume 122 No. 01 One of the pleasures of my job is being able to travel a bit and meet some truly wonderful people. There are academy alumni in almost every state of the U.S. If my schedule would permit, l could be on the road every week, visiting with people and sharing current academy news with them as they share their academy stories with me. If there are any alumni who do not have some great stories about their academy days, I haven't met them yet. Every one I have met loves the school and is grateful for the experiences the academy offered. On a very enjoyable and memorable recent trip to the Atlanta, Georgia, area, I talked with four very different graduates. Their school days span the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Although their stories were different, their love for the school and the relationships they spoke of reflect a consistent theme.

Extractions: I went to Freedom Mountain Academy just four years ago, but the positive effects have already aided me in many aspects of my life. I learned to analyze and think critically about what I was taught; I learned to improvise and make things happen; and I learned how to survive with just the things I packed in my backpack. Collectively, our small staff has many decades of experience in developing high-quality, traditional education in combination with mountain-adventure skills and farm work. The program we have developed is unique; there are no similar programs that combine solid academics with farm work and mountaineering search-and-rescue training expeditions. This is truly a program that provides a broad-based learning environment.

After 10 successful years in Idaho, the Cullinanes sold the farm campus and moved on to other adventures in education. In 1999 they located an ideal piece of mountain farm land amid the beautiful hills of northeast Tennessee on which to build Freedom Mountain Academy, a boarding school identical to their Academy of the Rockies. Co-Founder of Freedom Mountain Academy She married Kevin Cullinane in 1977 and sold Carden Hall to join him at his Academy of the Rockies in the Idaho panhandle 25 miles south of the Canadian border. There she assisted him until 1982 when they moved to South Carolina to develop Freedom Country Executive Conference Center. In 1993 the Cullinanes moved to Orange County, California, to develop Carden Academy of Basic Education, which Patricia directed. The students are mostly from Middle Tennessee and all are in school in Bell Buckle, a rural town so small that the nearly 300 students comprise about half the population. Webb is a private school, so even though 40% of the student body is on partial scholarship, there is little real experience of anything less that what might fairly be called privilege. The film is about two inner city Chicago students who, because of their basketball skills, will attend St. Josephs, a well-known local preparatory school, and be given an opportunity that has the potential to bring both young men out of the ghetto. As the kids at Webb watch the kids at St. Josephs face the inherent challenges in such a situation, the opportunity for the discussion of ethics is close to infinite. They watch the movie in segments, pausing for discussion of questions asked by their teacher, Ron Smithquestions such as: What makes one person push himself and the other not? Smith continues, Ethics is not only about how you treat others, its about how you treat yourself. Why do we treat ourselves the way we do?

Extractions: Boarding school involves the combination of the residing of pupils at an institution away from their family and home, and the instruction and endowment of education to students at the same place. The term boarding school fundamentally refers to classic British boarding schools, and most boarding schools around the world are modeled on the classic British boarding school. Boarding schools have specified rooms or allotted areas for different activities that occur throughout the day as defined by the boarding school administrators. These activities have a predefined structure and time set by the institution. These predefined schedules and norms are to be strictly followed, the failure of which could earn punishment. These rooms include the dormitory, where pupils share sleeping quarters, particularly on bunk beds, the refectory, where pupils take meals at fixed schedules, and the study hall, where pupils do their academic work. It also has facilities for bath and washing, and a storehouse for the storage of residents' belongings. Boarding schools also provide a playground for games and activities for the students The term boarding school is derived from the usage to board in school, which means to stay or reside in the school. Many public schools ("private school" in American English) are boarding schools. They involve long-term separation from one's parents and culture, and thus give rise to a phenomenon known as the TCK or third culture kid. Pupils may be sent to boarding schools between the ages of two and eighteen; they can be sent to any number of specific types of boarding schools, from nursery boarding schools (or Kindergarten boarding schools) to senior preparatory boarding schools. The amount of time one spends in boarding school also varies considerably, from a brief period of 1 year to more than 12 years in boarding school.

Extractions: Contact us today to get help for struggling teens There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots.
Alternative Schools - Private Boarding Schools Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. http://www.militaryschooloptions.com/education.html
Extractions: Contact us today to get help for struggling teens With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind.
