Extractions: SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic Swimming medals are expected from Americans. Team handball medals are not. The United States got some of both Monday at the Pan American Games. The swimmers won three of the five races, including a romp in the women's 800-meter freestyle relay, and collected four silvers. Team handball, hardly a mainstream American sport, produced a bronze for the men, who beat Uruguay 25-23. Mark Gangloff of Akron, Ohio, set a Pan Ams record in the 100-meter breaststroke of 1 minute, .95 seconds. He broke the mark of Ed Moses set four years ago. "I was very happy with my time," he said. "To beat Ed Moses' record means a lot. He's been the top American for a long time." Jarrod Marrs of Baton Rouge, La., was second. Courtney Shealy of Columbia, S.C., a 2000 Olympics relay winner, took the women's 100 freestyle in 55.61. There was a dead heat for silver between Christina Swindle of Miami and Florencia Szigetti of Argentina. The relay team of Elizabeth Hall, Atlanta; Colleen Lanne, Tucson, Ariz.; Carly Piper, Grosse Pointe, Mich.; and Dana Vollmer, Fort Worth, Texas, never was challenged.

Extractions: FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW: Team Handball is a sport which is kind of like soccer using your hands instead of your feet. It is fast, physical and fun, but few Americans have ever heard of it. We Americans think it has something to do with hitting a ball against a wall with our hand! Not so! Team handball is the second most popular sport in Europe (behind soccer). The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed in three different European countries. By 1925, the game had become fairly popular in other European countries. The International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF) was established in 1928; handball was a demonstration sport at the Olympics that year and again in 1932. That form of handball, designed to be played outdoors by teams of eleven players, was a full-fledged Olympic sport at the 1936 Munich Games. The United States finished sixth and last in the competition. When handball was introduced to the United States, about 1930, the name was already being used for the court game that was very popular in YMCAs across the country,.so the new import was called "field handball," eventually shortened to "fieldball," and it was at first played primarily by girls and women. The seven-player version, however, became known as team handball in the United States. Although it has never achieved great popularity, it was adopted by the U. S. Army as a camp sport in many areas of the country. Many Boys' and Girls' Clubs also took it up, followed by Explorer Scouts and even some high schools and colleges. The U. S. Team Handball Federation was founded in 1959 to standardize rules and sanction competition.

Extractions: Handball is fast and furious Handball is all about high speed and precise, quick passing - one of the more high octane sports at the Olympics. The key to success lies in players working together at highg speed to move the ball up the court, and they do so much quicker than their footballing counterparts. A match lasts for an hour and the speed of the sport means there are frequent goals. At the last Olympics the match average in both the men's and women's tournament was more than 50 goals-a-game. This time around 12 teams will contest the men's tournament, with 10 in the women's event. TOURNAMENT TEAMS Men
