Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus , who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent Molecular systematics , which uses genomic DNA analysis , has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics The earliest known system of classifying forms of life comes from the Greek philosopher Aristotle , who classified animals based on their means of transportation (air, land, or water). In 1172 Ibn Rushd ( Averroes ), who was a judge (Qaadi) in

Extractions: The research group in systematics and taxonomy at the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology in Trondheim consists of botanists and zoologists at the Section of Natural History. Our research projects involves studies on a variety of organisms ranging from mosses and marine polychaetes to insects like bark beetles, butterflies and non-biting midges. The research group attempts to focus on problems of macroevolutionary character such as species delimitation, phylogenetic relationships and morphological and molecular evolution between species, genera and families. To solve our problems and test our hypotheses we use both morphological and molecular data in our character- and phylogenetic analyses.
Department Of Biological Sciences Department of Biological Sciences. MSc in Advanced Methods in taxonomy and Biodiversity. Course Directors, Dr DLJ Quicke, Imperial College, Silwood Park, http://www.bio.ic.ac.uk/teaching/pg/amtb.htm
Extractions: Vogler, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, Email: apv@nhm.ac.uk This course is run jointly by Imperial College and the Natural History Museum (NHM), London. The museum has a collection of 67 million items and is a leading research institute in taxonomy and biodiversity. The MSc is a full-time, one-year course leading to the MSc degree of the University of London and the Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC). It is supported with NERC Advanced Course Studentships. The course is held at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in central London and taught jointly by staff of the NHM and Imperial College. The field course is held at Silwood Park, Ascot. The taught part of the course is not centered on any particular group of organisms, but will provide training relevant to all taxa. However, specialisation in the taxonomy or biodiversity of a particular group will be possible through the four-month research project. A wide-ranging list of suitable projects will be provided, and every effort will be made to help students to undertake research projects of their own devising, possibly in their own country.
