PREVENTIVE MEDICINE AND BIOMETRICS 11 Quarter Hours This is a medical school course in which the graduate students participate fully in classes and labs with the first year medical students. This course integrates neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with gross anatomy of the head and neck to foster appreciation of the integrated function of these structures. Teaching involves a variety of didactic instruction, laboratory cadaver dissections, brain slices, images of histological preparations, and interactive workshops. Grading is based upon written multiple choice testing and practical exams of the laboratory work. Laboratory attendance is mandatory. This course is intended as the introduction to an extended study of the development, form, and function of the normal human body. Covered in a series of overlapping and interdependent lectures and laboratory exercises are Basic Cell Biology, Basic Tissue Types, Core Concepts of Physiology, and Early Embryonic Development. Some examples of projects are the development of population modelling software to aid in the management of threatened species (downloadable for free), assessment of habitat quality for native mammals and fish and the implementation of recovery plans for the protection of native orchid species. Key projects in this theme: Recovery Plans for Threatened Vertebrates: National Recovery Plans are currently being developed for several vertebrate species (growling grass frog Litoria raniformis , Alpine tree frog Litoria verreauxii , stuttering frog Mixophyes balbus , southern brown bandicoot Isoodon obesulus obesulus and spotted-tailed quoll Dasyurus maculatus ) considered nationally threatened ( Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999). Extractions: NeMys is a database system developed to store as many as possible types of biological information on mainly marine taxa in a fully digital way. The concept of storing data on morphology, biogeography, taxonomy, literature, pictures, collections and molecular analyses in one dataset, creates a large group of possible end users and makes it possible to analyse and compare data on a taxonomic group from different points of view. The database was developed at the Marine Biology Section (Ghent University) mainly with focus on marine Nematoda and Mysida. Data input is done at the Marine Biology Section (Ghent University) (Mysida by Tim Deprez, Nematoda by several meiobenthic researchers). For both Mysida and Nematoda, information on species worldwide is entered. Especially for nematoda, priorities for data logging follow from the activities of the section. For Mysida, data is entered systematically for all species, in the framework of the PhD research of Tim Deprez.

The task of constructing a taxonomy of programs is to provide a framework for the analysis of research-doctorate programs as they exist today, with an eye to the future. A secondary question is: Which fields should be grouped together and what names should be given to these aggregations? We recognize that scholarship and research in interdisciplinary fields have grown significantly since the last study. Some of this work is multidisciplinary; some is crossdisciplinary or interdisciplinary. We could not devise a single standard for all possible combinations. Where possible, we have attempted to include acknowledged interdisciplinary fields such as Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and American Studies. In other instances, we listed areas as emerging fields. Our goal remains to identify and evaluate inter-, multi-, and cross-disciplinary fields.
