Zanzibar International film festival (ZIFF) ZIFF is a culture, arts and media non-governmental organisation which recognises the vital role played by cinema and other media in the development of society and in promoting friendship and co-operation among nations. The event named the Festival of the Dhow Countries is the main activity of the Zanzibar International Film Festival. We enhance appreciation for UK creativity and artistic achievements through our partnership with ZIFF by sponsoring forums and workshops during the festival. The European Film Festival Every year we take part in the European Film Festival by offering a small selection of films reflecting the range of excellence and creative vision of British film-makers. The Festival presents an opportunity for us to participate in a wider cultural relations debate along with European partners committed to increasing awareness in film and film-making in Tanzania.

Extractions: Straddling the newly paved Makuyuni Ngorongoro road, gateway to Tanzanias famed northern tourist circuit, the village of Esilalei and its roughly 5,000 Maasai residents face constant pressure on their traditional lifestyle. More than just tourists move through Esilalei. The village also lies within the critical Kwakuchinja wildlife corridor where wildebeest, zebra, and elephant move freely across the larger Maasai Steppe ecosystem. In 1990, a group of Esilalei women formed the Naisho Womens Group - Naisho means increase or multiply in Maasai - to work towards preserving their culture and alleviating gender inequality and poverty. Seeking to capitalize on their location, Naisho established the Esilalei Cultural Boma in 1999 as a way of bringing tourist dollars to the village. The Naishos Womens Group is generating income for the rural community while preserving the traditional Maasai culture.

Nevertheless, an increasing number of governments recognise the importance of culture in itself and in connection to social and economic development. Mfuko is an independent fund for the arts established in 1998 by the Swedish and Tanzanian governments. A committee consisting of ten members, most of whom from the national art world, meets twice each year to evaluate requests for three types of subsidies: support for cultural organisations, subsidies for artists, and grants for international exchange. To date the fund has supported 302 cultural projects and artists. Each year Mfuko also presents the Zeze Cultural Awards: the most prestigious art prize in Tanzania. Western scientists and students of history have long explained the iron bloomery process by evidence available from European archeology. Ethnographic, technological, and archeological research into the technological life of the Haya of northwestern Tanzania show that these people and their forebears 1500 to 2000 years ago practiced a highly advanced iron smelting technology based on preheating principles and, as a result, produced carbon steel. This sophisticated technology may have evolved as an adaptation to overexploited forest resources. These discoveries are significant for the history of Africa and the history of metallurgy. Cultural monuments and sites are a source of emotional and aesthetic experiences for many people, and modern society can benefit from the preservation and active use of its cultural heritage. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage is responsible for the management of all archaeological and architectural monuments and sites and cultural environments in accordance with the applicable legislation. The Directorate is under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and plays a central role in public environmental management. Each county has a service responsible for cultural conservation in connection with the general administration of cultural affairs.
