Sattler, PhD Born in 1931 in the Bronx, N.Y., Jerome Sattler has made significant contributions to the psychological assessment of children and the education of a legion of applied and research psychologists. He began his teaching career in 1959 at Fort Hays Kansas State College and then held teaching positions at the University of North Dakota and San Diego State University (SDSU), where he taught until he retired in 1994. In 1971, Sattler received a Fulbright award and was a lecturer at the University of Kebangsaan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was an exchange professor at Katholieke Universiteit in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1983 and at University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland, in 1989. He is currently a professor emeritus and an adjunct professor at SDSU. Sattler's major publications include "Assessment of Children" (Jerome M. Sattler, 1973) and "Clinical and Forensic Interviewing of Children and Families" (Jerome M. Sattler, 1997). "Assessment of Children" has gone through four editions, trained more than 250,000 students and professionals, been referred to as "the bible" of assessment and has been rated by fellow psychologists as one of the 50 greatest books in psychology. Sattler's early publications were on embarrassment, existential theory and personality. For the remainder of his career, he focused primarily on assessment issues. He analyzed the functions measured by the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale; studied the effects of cues on two Wechsler subtests; examined the effects of procedural, situational and interpersonal variables on individual intelligence tests; studied the effects of ethnicity on the psychologist-client relationship in assessment, interviews, counseling and psychotherapy, and experimental situations; evaluated halo effects in examiner scoring of intelligence test responses; and examined item bias on intelligence tests. His work has been cited more than 2,300 times in the Social Science Citation Index.

These ambassadors from the "real world" makes a deep impression on students, Dorchester County CC! coordinator Laura Weldon told The Daily Banner "One of my volunteers, who owns his own business, told me of a discussion he had with his class regarding the type of person he looks for in an employee," Ms. Weldon said. "One of his students was giving him some lip, and he quickly told the young man, ‘Acting that way will never get you a job with my or anybody else's company.' Hearing that kind of message from someone other than mom or dad or a teacher really makes a lot of the students stop and think about their futures."

The symposium will evaluate the latest assessment techniques in the identification of gifted learners. Organized by Richard A. Boolootian and Linda Silverman, speakers also include Dawn Flanagan, John Wasserman, Annemarie Roeper, R. Frank Falk, Deirdre V. Lovecky, Kathi Kearney, Bobbie Gilman and John Thomas West. Beginning with an overview of the complexity of assessing gifted children with the new instruments, presenters will then discuss the use of the fourth edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV), the new General Ability Index, research with gifted children on different versions of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale and the WISC-IV, the utility of nonverbal measures and the effectiveness of qualitative assessment. All of the major IQ tests used to select gifted students have been completely reformulated in the last two years. The scores they generate are not comparable to scores derived from previous versions. Therefore, it is essential for all personnel who rely on intelligence tests to understand how to interpret information from these new instruments.

Extractions: March 01, 2002 Dear Friends of Art, Some time ago we added to our gallery a collection by Alexey Venetsianov , an original Russian artist of the first half of the 19th century. Venetsianov was a self-taught and self-made man; he began to study art and painting rather late. One can't call him a great master, who reached the peaks of profession. His paintings are intimate, serene, 'primitive' and very national. His models are not aristocratic beauties, but mostly peasants, common Russian types. Perhaps the most wonderful achievement of the artist was the creation of his own school, which differed greatly from the official Academy of Arts and was open to people of very low origin and means and of all ages. The pedagogical system of Alexey Venetsianov was based on an attentive and loving attitude to nature. His pupils lived and worked on his estate during the summer, and in winter they studied at his St. Petersburg studio and attended, on his recommendations, the drawing classes of the Academy of Arts. Venetsianov rejected the academic method, which prescribed lasting and sustained drawing from classical engravings, followed by the copying of paintings. The master urged his pupils to work from nature from the very beginning to draw and paint geometrical bodies and occasional household objects. Later on they started work on plaster models and eventually went over to the representation of the human figure and uncomplicated genre scenes. Venetsianov urged the need to carefully study simple nature because of its endless diversity.
